How do British Columbians understand reproductive healthcare? More specifically, what do people know about abortion care? How do people access abortion care? What are patients’ rights to abortion healthcare? These are the questions that a study by UBC Okanagan researchers will be exploring over the next few months.

We think it is very important to better understand what people know about abortion healthcare and medical care residents are entitled to for abortions. We focus on the regions of Okanagan, Thompson Cariboo Shuswap, Kootenay Boundary, and East Kootenay. The study consists of an online survey that will take approximately 10-15 minutes to complete. At the end of the survey participants are also welcome to volunteer for a follow-up interview if they would like to discuss the topics and questions in the survey further.

Why is this study important and necessary? We believe that the practical availability of abortion care might be impacted by the level of knowledge of those seeking care or supporting someone seeking care. Therefore, by better understanding the knowledge that people have of abortion healthcare we ultimately hope to contribute to improved healthcare access.

Everyone residing in the Okanagan, Thompson Cariboo Shuswap, Kootenay Boundary, and East Kootenay is welcome to participate. The survey is accessed through the link below. Additional information about the project is provided on the survey page. You are also welcome to contact the researchers at the email listed above if you have any questions. The study will be open for a minimum of 4 months beginning August 7, 2020.
