OAC Athletes Shine at Battle of the Borders Track & Field Meet

More than 20 high schools from BC and Alberta gathered in Kamloops last weekend for the Battle of the Border High School Track and Field Meet. Despite rainy conditions, Okanagan Athletics Club (OAC) athletes shone, bringing home numerous first place finishes and some record performances.

“The OAC athletes dominated in every event in which they were entered,” says Pat Sima-Ledding, OAC coach.

“The highlight of the meet was Jerome Blake's performances. He won the 100 m, the 200m and the 400m. His 100m time of 11.05 ranks him number one in Canada for Junior men. His 200m time of 22.36 puts him in second in the country. Jerome's 400m clocking of 51.14 is ranked sixth nationally,” Sima-Ledding says.

Keely Watts-Watling, grade 12, won both the senior girls 100m hurdles and the long jump. Keely's jump of 4.95 m ranks her third in Canada.

Veronika Fagan, grade 11, won gold in the 1500 m with a time of 5:08.43 and the 3000 m with a time of
10:58.76.

Grade 8 students Maggie Minkus and Taryn O’Neill also took home gold. Minkus placed first in both the 100 and 200 m. O’Neill’s winning time of 2:31.08 in the 800 m set a new meet record. Her 3000 m time of 10:58.98 put her in second place.

Sisters Rhianne and Leah McWilliam battled it out for first place in the junior girls 400 m with Rhianne eking Leah out by 1.32 s. Rhianne finished with a time of 65.89. The 200 m was another close race with Rhianne placing third with a time of 29.38 and Leah finishing fourth with a time of 29.51.



Danielle Mitchell won the senior girls 400m and was second in the 200m. Rylee Paulson, grade 8, placed third in the junior girls 400 m with a time of 71.17 and fourth in the 3000 m with a time of 11:42.33.

Jacob Bouchier, grade 9, finished second in the men’s 3000 m with a time of 9:54.62 and placed third in the 1500 m.

“Reece Walsh ran the 100m, 200m and 400m, achieving a personal best performances in the 200m (23.57), which is the third fastest men's youth time posted nationally,” Sima-Ledding says.

Emma Morel finished in third place in her 100m sprint and fourth in the junior girls 80m hurdles as well as the high jump.

On the field, OAC athletes also excelled. Austin Sandrin won the discus with a throw of 37.49 m and came in a close second place finish in the javelin.

Nevena Simeunovic won the junior girls javelin with new meet record distance of 24.49 m.
