Hug A Mug Campaign
THE “HUG-A-MUG” CAMPAIGN
Taking the waste out of take-out coffee

KELOWNA, BC: Waste Conscious Living (WCL) is partnering with One Big Table (OBT) to bring Kelowna the Hug-A-Mug Campaign. Starting April 21st, One Big Table will stop offering disposable coffee mugs for their customer’s to-go coffees, and will be offering ceramic, reusable mugs instead. Customers can take the mug with them on the go and return it to One Big Table during their next visit. This way, even if you forget your reusable mug you can still get a coffee to-go waste-free.

According to the City of Vancouver, “2.6 million coffee cups (polycoat paper cups) are thrown in the trash in Vancouver every week.” No matter which statistic you find, the number of disposable coffee cups used each week is staggering. “We read about cafes that were no longer offering disposable coffee cups and were giving their customers reclaimed mugs instead. We loved the idea and immediately thought of One Big Table to pilot the project.” says Sarah Coffey of Unless Market and Waste Conscious Living. Guilio Piccioli, of One Big Table loved the idea of the project saying “We are excited to work alongside the Waste Conscious Living team and Unless Market with the goal to create a greener One Big Table and spark a meaningful conversation amongst our guests and community. As a new & ethically driven business, we are excited for the opportunity to spearhead this project alongside these solid community partners.”

In order to pull off the switch from disposable to reusable mugs, OBT, WCL, and Unless are asking for the community’s help. They are running a Mug-Drive from March 24th to April 14th, 2018, asking for donations of mugs from your home, workplace, or dorm room. Make some space in your cupboards and help contribute to waste reduction in our community. All donated mugs must be clean, chip free, and dishwasher safe. Mugs can be dropped off at One Big Table and Unless Market during business hours.

The launch of the project will take place at One Big Table on April 21st 2018 as an early celebration for Earth Day.
