Kelowna Women's Shelter Thrift Store on Lawrence Has to Move
Sep 13, 2013

After ten years of operation and service to the community, at 527 Lawrence Ave, the Kelowna Women’s Shelter Thrift store is set to close October 31st due to the sudden sale of the building by the landlord. The new owner will be taking over and using the space themselves.
“We had outgrown the space and have for some time been looking for a new location, but it has been hard to find a suitable space. What we are trying to find is a commercial space centrally located, with convenient parking and between 2000 and 3000 square feet. We also have to consider the price per square foot†said Karen Leboe, the Administration Manager at the Shelter.
This October the Thrift Store had planned on celebrating the Anniversary of Ten Years in business. They are still hoping to do so if a space can be found. The need to move has been stressful for staff and will be disappointing to clients and customers who have benefited from the store. Proceeds from the sales at the store have helped to fund the services to women and children in impacted by abuse. Clients of the Shelter may also access clothes, toiletries, toys and household items free of charge. Many in the community have also benefited from getting a free loaf of bread each Friday. Donations from those who want more than one loaf cover the cost of transportation and bagging and contribute to Shelter services.
