Snowshoe Sam’s Sold to Local Entrepreneurs with Historic Ties to Business
The iconic mountain pub enters its latest chapter with the Nixon family
Kelowna, BC: Big White’s award-winning pub – it has been voted the #1 Ski Bar in North America - is the longest operating one at the resort and its legacy will continue as the business changes hands heading into this season. Snowshoe Sam’s has been sold by current proprietors Ian Weaver and Juliette Weaver to Kyle and Carolyn Nixon, who you may know as the owner/operators of a few other restaurants in Kelowna, including the one that started it all, BNA Brewing Co. & Eatery. While these other three are located downtown Kelowna, the Nixons’ expansion up to Big White has a unique story.
Jim Nixon (Kyle’s dad) and Ralf Rohrlack (Carolyn’s father) actually knew each other from their days working Ski Patrol back in Saskatchewan. Having each decided to move west and make Kelowna home, their paths would cross again at Big White, where Ralf was involved in designing and building many of the structures in the original village at the ski resort, including Snowshoe Sam’s. He and his wife Carol enjoyed the mountain as it developed, and soon Jim and his wife Diana would arrive and open Whiskey Jacks and The Red Onion, where Sessions now lives. Nixon (Sr.) bought Snowshoe Sam’s in 1982, before eventually deciding to shift his energy into town, where he and his family owned and operated McCullough Station Pub and The Hotel Eldorado for a number of years. Since retired (sort of), Jim and Diana have passed along their love of hospitality to their son Kyle, who along with his wife Carolyn and the incredible team they’ve assembled are passionate about creating great experiences for locals and tourists alike. Their purchase of Snowshoe Sam’s is certainly a proud moment and they can’t wait to continue its story. “On top of the family nostalgia connected to this business for us,” says Carolyn, “we’re just super excited for the opportunity to carry on with the fun this place has always been known for!”
About Nixon Hospitality: Kyle and Carolyn Nixon opened BNA Brewing Co. & Eatery in June 2015, which marked the beginning of what would eventually become Nixon Hospitality, a group of folks who love to do cool stuff in the city we get to call home! With Carolyn and Kyle at the helm, The collaborative now includes BNA - the craft brewery, scratch kitchen eatery, and boutique bowling alley; Skinny Duke’s Glorious Emporium - the retro-inspired, forward-thinking restaurant with incredibly flavourful dishes and unique custom cocktails; Bernie’s Supper Club & Cinema - the recently-opened bespoke downtown movie theatre serving one-of-a-kind wines and an elegantly eclectic menu; Del’s Super Cool Wine Spritzer - a fresh take on a classic using Okanagan-made fruit wine; and Public Liquor - a people-driven liquor store that supports both its staff and the local beer, wine, and spirit producers of the area.
