July 2, 1961 - January 2, 2025
Born on July 2, 1961, in Red Deer, AB, John Zyderveld, at the age of 63, passed away unexpectedly, and he went to be with the Lord on January 2, 2025, in Kelowna, BC.
John is lovingly remembered by his children, Christopher (Selina Metez) and Leslie (Riley Carruthers); his granddaughter, Ruby Carruthers, born January 1, 2025; and his brother, Leonard (Doreen) Zyderveld. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. John was predeceased by his parents, Jack and Henrika Zyderveld.
John spent his early years in Alberta, moving to Kelowna at the age of 12, where he grew to love the Okanagan Valley. A true outdoorsman at heart, he enjoyed fishing, downhill skiing, and camping, and embraced an active, athletic lifestyle. He appreciated life’s simple pleasures and often dreamed of living closer to nature, away from modern distractions.
Professionally, John worked as a Fisheries Technician, a role that allowed him to combine his passion for the natural world with his career.
He will be fondly remembered for his humour, including his lighthearted favourite phrase, “Wooden shoes; wooden head; wooden listen!”

John was my good buddy back in high school where we had a lot of good times. I remember riding up to the small lakes around Kelowna on his enduro bike and floating around on his dingy trying to catch some lake trout. I also remember a lot of good time skiing at Big White. I hadn't seen John in over 40 years but I know he had a full life loving the outdoors. My thoughts and prayers are with you John and your family at this time. - Russell Rice - Jan 19, 2025
John was our neighbour for years and before that, his parents. It will be strange to live without a “Zeiderveld” around here. So sorry for your loss. Gisela and Dieter Howald - Gisela Howald - Jan 17, 2025
Going to miss your snorting laugh and dancing eyes John. You came to visit every couple weeks to our place for a meal and a net flix movie. I'd have a running commentary on the show which probably was annoying sometimes. I didn't know you were looking when I'd sing or do a happy dance, thinking I was out of sight in the kitchen until I'd hear you crack up.
Sometimes you sprung for pizza so I didn't have to cook. Len enjoyed visiting you on the Sundays at your place when you didn't come to our home. He misses you more than you know and is lost without his younger brother. RIP John Boy... - Doreen and Len Zyderveld
