WIERING, Paul Maria

WIERING, Paul Maria

October 3, 1961- October 31, 2018

It is with broken hearts that we announce sudden passing of Paul with his only son Robert by his side. He was a beloved and devoted father, son, brother, uncle, nephew and cousin.

Paul went to school at St. Joseph Elementary and graduated from KLO Secondary in 1979. He enlisted in the Canadian Military and had to wait till his 18th birthday. He became troop sergeant major and was stationed out of CFB Shilo, MB. He went on several United Nation Tours in Cypress, Austria and Europe. He didn’t speak much of those tours except about Cypress and often commented on the blood warm waters there. After an honorable discharge in 1990, Paul worked for Home Hardware and then Riverside Forest Products (Tolko) till the layoffs came in 2003.

Paul had a love for camping and fishing, motorcycles, a good cigar and long drives. He donned a black belt in Jiu Jit-Su. While his father was alive, he would dotingly polish his Lee Enfield 303 British rifle. He was a member of the Army, Navy, Airforce Association Unit 376. Paul was extremely proud of his son for honoring and respecting all soldiers and it made him smile when Robert would play the “Last Post” on his trumpet during Remembrance Day services. Paul especially loved going out for lunch or dinner with Robert and often would say, “Eet Smakelijk.”

We remember Paul for his kind, caring attitude, his beautiful smile, a broad sense of humour, and his devotion to family and close friends. He and Robert would faithfully visit his mother Vera, (Oma) at Sun Pointe Village. Paul was a very private and honorable man. His “no” meant no and when his mind was made up there was no changing it – “You can always tell a Dutchman but you can’t tell him much!” He was very much about peace and lived life enjoying the simple things many of us have forgotten.

Paul is survived by his son Robert Wiering (Tiffany Spencer), mother Vera Wiering, brothers John Wiering, ((Kathy), Parksville, BC, Theo Wiering, (Jill), 100 Mile House, BC, sisters Rita Shore, (Vern) Powell River, BC, and Margaret Potter, (Glenn), Calgary, AB, his nephews and nieces, Sean, Brianna, Nathan, Lisa, Cory, Cierra, Vincent, and Nicolas as well as his cousins, aunts and uncles.

Paul is predeceased by his brother Frank Wiering, father Paul Wiering, and nephew Robbie Shore. Also mourning his passing are Robert’s mother Lisa Detmers, (Myk), best friend Darren Botham, long time friends Dan Tomelin, and Norm Fleury, (Brandon, MB.), and his loyal friends from Kelowna and around the world.
The family wants to thank the trauma team at KGH for working so hard in trying to save him and to the social worker lady for her kindness. We still can’t believe you are gone – you are missed and loved so much! Now you are at peace – pacis pater filium militem fratrem!

There will be a viewing at Everden Rust Funeral home on Friday, November 2, 2018 from 4:00pm -5:00pm. A Celebration of Paul’s life will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, if you so wish to do so, a donation may be made in Paul’s honor to a charity of your choice. Condolences may be sent to the family to: [email protected].
