THOMPSON, Alexander

THOMPSON, Alexander

February 9, 2001 - September 13, 2023

With a heavy heart, we share the loss of our cherished Alexander Thompson, who unexpectedly passed away on September 13, 2023 during a hiking accident. Alex came into this world with so much to give on February 9, 2001. He was nurtured to appreciate and embrace every encounter life had to offer. He will always be in the hearts of his loving family: his parents, Jeff & Lorenda Thompson; and his sister Olivia Thompson; as well as his grandparents Alida & Dwaine Sordahl; Auntie Tala & Uncle Brian Wambacher and cousins, Eric and Samantha; and Auntie Chris & Uncle Barry Richards and cousins, Chelsey and Justin. He goes to join his grandparents Doug & Ev Thompson and his grandfather Bob Mihalynuk, who passed before him.

Alex's curiosity was ignited from a very young age by his experiences on his beloved dirt bike, it was a gateway to many adventurous endeavours. He loved camping, hiking, and was an avid skier.

At age 5, Alex started playing baseball. For 13 years, he played on many teams and made many lasting friendships. He earned the nickname "Smiley", and for good reason, that nickname stuck with him for life. Alex was fortunate to have some encouraging coaches, including his dad. One of the highlights of his baseball career was when he won the 2017 Provincials in his hometown.

Smart and determined, Alex managed to handle schoolwork, volleyball, basketball, and baseball. Teamwork was his specialty. He always had a kind word or a goofy comment, which would make his teammates and fellow students laugh.

Nursing was his passion and goal, Alex had almost completed his nursing degree to become an RN; a perfect fit for his kindness, compassion, and care. His combination of intelligence, empathy, and his sense of humour would have made him an excellent nurse.

Whether it was a new hike, a rock to climb, or almost anything else outdoors, Alex never had a hard time finding someone to join him, and he was always up for a new adventure. Alex also had a passion for going to see the latest movies with his buddies. Alex was an exceptional friend.

While during his 22 years on this earth, Alex touched so many lives, his truest love was for his family. He was a son and brother first, he was happy to stay home and spend time with Mom, Dad, and Liv. He was an amazing grandson, nephew, and cousin. Family was extremely important to Alex, and once you became his friend, you became family.

Alex was taken away too soon. He was doing one of the things he loved most, hiking the top of a mountain. So, as you remember Alex, look up to the sky and smile.

Fly high, Alex! We Love you forever!

We have established a memorial bursary in honour of Alex, which will support a student embarking on their nursing program journey. Instead of sending flowers, please consider making a contribution to the bursary fund by e-transferring funds to [email protected].

A Celebration of Life will be held on SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 30, 2023, at 1:00 PM (PDT), at SPRINGFIELD FUNERAL HOME, 2020 Springfield Road, Kelowna, BC. If you are unable to attend in person, please join the family online by Livestream at the time of the service (see below), a recording will be made available to view shortly thereafter.

As a Mom of a 22 year old adventurer too, Lewis, one of Alex’s many many friends, I am heartbroken for the loss of your very special son. I often heard of their adventures in recent years since graduation together from RSS and it’s clear you raised an amazing young man. We hold our kids so close, and then let them be free to soar and explore life to the full. I’ve no words to express the complete disbelief of this tragic accident. I’ll think of Alex when I look to the sky and hope you all can find some solace in the joy and compassion he clearly brought to so many during his all too short time with us.

Heartfelt condolences from Jude, Lewis & Owen x - Jude Brunt

    Lorenda, Jeff and Liv,

It wouldn’t be right if I didn’t start this post thanking you. Thank you for allowing us to share in Alex like another son and brother for us. Our hearts are shattered right alongside yours.

What an incredible gift Alex was to the Paley family and the world at large. I watched this smart, inquisitive shy and quiet fun-loving boy become the strong, adventurous, kind, funny, caring man that he was.

Alex indelibly touched every life he came across and left each one of us for the better just by being in our lives.

The pictures and moments of our times together have been flipping through my mind on a steady reel since I found out Thursday morning. Precious memories that I will hold dear for a lifetime.

We walk beside you through this valley of grief. You can count on us for anything you need. No matter the time or day.

We will be here for all three of you. We love you.

Today on my drive home I took your advice Lorenda, I looked up to the sky and the sunlight shone down in great beams through the clouds and I smiled up at our boy and thought, our boy isn’t gone, we just need to look for his signs. Fly free, sweet Alex. Till we see you again

    All of my love,

    Denise - Denise Paley

Dear Jeff, Lorenda and Olivia. We've had the honor of watching Alex grow for the last 20 years. Seeing Alex shovel your driveway, walking Juna and of course all the times at our kids schools. I felt proud when he crossed the stage at RSS commencement and hearing that nursing was his post secondary goal. Perfect fit. The Yost family will miss Alex every day. We will look up and smile as he turned and smiled a big hello to us all the time.

Sincerely Shelley, Warren, Scott & Chase Yost - Shelley Yost
