SMITHWICK, Jeremiah (Jerry)

SMITHWICK, Jeremiah (Jerry)

Jerry was born November 2, 1918 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. He was the youngest of four children born to Margaret and Thomas Smithwick: Bill, Tom, Peggy and Jerry.

Jerry received most of his education in Saskatoon at St. Joseph Elementary, Nutana High School and the University of Saskatchewan, where he achieved a B.A. Jerry finished his education at Cornell University, New York City, USA, with a diploma in Physical Therapy.

In 1943, while travelling to New York, Jerry stopped in Montreal to see his brother Bill, who was a pharmacist working in a laboratory in Nitro, Quebec. Nitro was a small village located 30 miles west of Montreal and was built during World War II by the Government of Canada to manufacture high explosives. It was a very important cog in the wheel of defense against the Nazis and was the biggest plant of its kind in the British Empire. Jerry

When I think of Jerry, I smile. He used to come in to our shop and I'd say "Hi Jerry, how're you doing" and his reply was always " well I'm still above ground!" I didn't know him well but I'm sure his sense of humor never left him. I knew he would have been the type of person who was WELL loved.

Although only a short acquaintance with Mr. Smithwick, I truly enjoyed his stories, his sense of humor and laughter, whenever we had occasion to be together for appointments or errands. Joyce, Tom and all family members, your husband/father was a very special man, and will be remembered in your hearts eternally and he is safe, without discomfort and where he wanted to be now. Wishing 'peace' to all of his loving family. W. Sheath

It was so sad to read about Jerry's passing. Jerry & I golfed together for several years and I enjoyed each and every time we met. My sympathy goes out to Joyce and her family.
