SHAW, Jack

SHAW, Jack

1925 - 2023

John Benjamin ‘Jack’ Shaw was born and raised in Merritt, BC. He enlisted in the RCAF in 1943 and was posted for duty as a tail gunner on Lancaster bombers, 103 RCAF Bomber Squadron. After his discharge in 1946, Jack moved to Osoyoos having secured employment with Canada Customs at the US border. He met and married Isabelle (1927 - 2006) and raised three children; Bruce (Regena) of Kamloops; Jack (Debbie) of Calgary; Lorri (Greg) of Crowsnest Pass. He will also be lovingly remembered by his grandchildren; Kelly (Nicolas); Lonnie (Amelia); Katie (Ryan); Melia (Clayton); John, Adrian, Jason (Roseanna), and eleven great-grandchildren. Jack was the Mayor of Osoyoos for about a decade and worked on the development of many infrastructure projects Osoyoos enjoys today. He recently received a 75-year Service pin from the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 103, Osoyoos.

Jack passed peacefully, surrounded by his family, amid a grand thunderstorm on May 3, 2023. At Jack’s request, there will be no service.

Sorry to hear of Jack's passing. In 2019, I interviewed him by phone regarding his stint in the RCAF when he completed his Tour of 30 combat operations as rear gunner in Lancaster bombers during WW2. He was in No. 103 Squadron RAF (not RCAF as stated elsewhere). Jack was as bright as a brass button. His information was accurate and caused renewed efforts to locate a missing airman who, as it turned out, was not KIA as thought, but had been a POW. For me, Jack's passing marks the end of an era. - R. A. Williams, Victoria, B.C.

Sad phone call this morning to check up on Jack & see if he wanted a ride out of the fire zone. He beat me to it & flew out high early on his last peaceful mission. RIP loved & big hugs. Mark Secord - Maureen Secord

Uncle Jack was our "fun" Uncle with always a trick up his sleeve, He held the best back yard parties for our family and Jack & Isabel were always the life of the party! He was my favorite Uncle and the last remaining sibling of our Mothers. He will be greatly missed, but lived a great life, befween, serving our country (Canada), Border Partol for many years and then Mayor of Osoyoos along with a successful real estate career. There wasn't anything he wouldn't tackle! May he rest in peace and hopefully caught up with Aunt Isabel in heaven. Catherine in Texas - Catherine Gorton
