RUZICKA, Vaclav "Bill"

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Vaclav "Bill" Ruzicka on November 10, 2021, Kelowna, BC. During his almost 81 years on this earth, he touched many lives in family and in friendship, through school, work, sport, and enterprise.

In 1970, Bill immigrated to Canada with his wife, they settled in the North Glenmore Valley in Kelowna. There he built a home and life for his family. He was a valued member of the international beekeeping community; his tireless work and research in the treatment of the varroa mite is a legacy he leaves to all present and future apiarists and their bee colonies.

Bill had many passions: flying aircraft, swimming, fishing and canoeing on rivers and lakes in summer, and skiing in winter, which brought him many great adventures and many new relationships worldwide.

He is survived by his two daughters and their families in British Columbia; his sister and her family in the Czech Republic; and his cousin and his family in Argentina.

He is and will be missed. --- Chybí nám a bude stále chybět. --- Él será extrañado.

Rest in peace. --- Nechť odpočívá v pokoji. --- Descansa en paz.

Bill was a good friend, big in size and a big personality. He loved paddling rivers and introduced me to canoeing. We met at W.Star, so I know him as an inventive and a no-nonsense engineer. He could make anything at his job, at home or at his honey farm.

We met the Ruzicka family in 1999 when I became the building manager at The Ponderosa Inn at Big White. I worked with Vaclav as a Beekeeper for 10 years.
He trained me form scratch. He called me MR. FIXIT at the HONEY Farm. I had to quit bee keeping due tue health issues but had a Blast while doing it.
I always called him Vaclav as I thought we should be called by our proper names no mater what Canadised one swere are given. My wife Cindy was his housekeeper fo 10 years and was eventually replaced by anohter Cindy. Vaclav thought this was good as he did not have to remember a new name. Cindy #1 and Cindy #2.
I learned a lot from Vaclav. I was amazed by his ingenuity and larger than life personality!

A remarkable, energetic man. So many interests! Bee Keeping was his life. Early on he described to me the waggle dance of bees. A method of measuring distances to honey sources! Bill's gregarious personality will be missed!

I knew Bill from when we both worked at Western Star Trucks. I was a welder in the machine shop and he was an engineer. I bought honey from him on occasion and found it amazing that such a big guy was a beekeeper. Everybody liked him and he played a part in the success of the company. My deepest condolences go out to his family.

This hurts my heart. I had the extreme pleasure of meeting Bill this year as my dad and I became new beekeepers. He was so helpful and answered every single crazy question I had. I grew very fond of him very quickly and he will definitely be missed. Sincere condolences to his family

We will miss Bill at the beach in Okanagan Center - We will always look at that spot (his chairs!) and think of Bill - fond memories. We shared a few beers and many stories in the shade there at the end of a hot day. Cheers Bill! Jannette and Glen Lucas

Bill provided bees to our farms for years. I helped him one season delivering and moving the hives, he was full of life, and humor. I have fond memories of him “explaining” to me how the farmers needed to work with the bees for success.
I offer condolences from my family to yours
