ROYLE, Derek

ROYLE, Derek

On Tuesday, September 19, 2017 Norman DEREK ROYLE died peacefully with Ilva, his beloved wife of 47 years at his side. He is survived by Ilva, their son Christopher (Jamie) Royle and Anne (Tom) Smith, Wendy (Geoff Weitzel) Royle, and Michael (Wendy) Royle from his former marriage. He will be missed by his sister-in-law, Lidia, and his nephews Gerry and Ray Morello along with their families, his grandchildren Joanna, Caitlin, Scott, Heather, Rachel, Sophie, and Jacob, his great-grand daughter Eden, and by Jess, Mark, Richard, and their families in England. Derek is pre-deceased by his parents, Norman and Gladys, his sisters Audrey and Doreen, and nephew Barry. The Royles wish to thank the Emergency staff and nurses for their compassion and excellence, Dr Falconer for his kindness and support, and especially Dr Allan Broome for his years of dedicated and loving care.
Derek was known to all as a loving husband, father, son, and brother. He will always be remembered as a dedicated and loyal man who loved his family, far and near. His family in England remained as much a part of his life as his wife and children here in Canada. Derek was an adventurer, outdoorsman, and lover of life. He and Ilva traveled all over the world, had many holidays in our beautiful country, and enjoyed all family events, both large and small. He was also a man of genuine curiosity, interested in all things. He was a proud Canadian who loved this country and the opportunities he found here. He was always interested in everything around him

We first met Derek 50 years ago, when first we arrived in Trail, not having a clue what to expect from Trail, and Canadian medicine(and its politics). We were made to feel so welcome by everyone, but Derek stood out by virtue of his friendliness and it helped also that he shared our English sense of humour!
Later, he came to live with us for a while before he moved to Kelowna, but we still saw lots of him before we left Canada in 1971 for England. Even afterwards, we met up lots of times, in Canada, and England(and memorably, on a European road trip to Venice) We always had lots of laughs with Derek and Ilva, whether it was on camping trips, skiing, arguing with Italian waiters in Italy or wandering around England. Throughout it all, Ilva was tolerant(of the Brits) supportive, and great company.
Derek was that rarest of men, a true friend, and a rock of reliability. His integrity was undoubted; all in all, he was the kind of man that we should all have in our lives.
Even though we have lived on different continents for decades, we will miss him enormously, but are so glad -and lucky - to have known him.
With love to Ilva and all the family
    Sue and Bob Ridley

Ilva, so sorry for your loss. Enjoyed kibitzing with you both at Big White many years ago. You were an awesome couple. And yes, he was a wonderful physician!

    Ilva and Family:
Sorry to hear of Derek's passing. Ilva, you and I grew up as neighbours in Trail, and a few years back I had the privilege of serving you and Derek as your architect. It was an excellent experience. Derek and you were a joy to work with. I enjoyed his humour and his professionalism.
    Memories forever.
    God Bless,

My condolences to Dr. Royle's family. He was my gynaecologist and one of the best Kelowna seen. Sometimes he fell on bedside manner but he never pussyfooted around he was direct and I loved that and his knowledge was outstanding.
