ROSS, Barbie Dean

ROSS, Barbie Dean

In Loving Memory of Barbie Dean Ross
June 2nd, 1949 - May 19th, 2023

Barbie Dean Ross, a beautiful and creative spirit, left this world on May 19th, 2023, leaving behind cherished memories and a legacy of love. Born on June 2nd, 1949, in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan to Jack and Beryl Elliott, Barbie brought joy and warmth to the lives she touched throughout her journey.

Barbie's unwavering love and devotion knew no bounds. She was a loving wife to her beloved husband, Ken, and a pillar of strength and support to her four adoring sons: Ryan and his wife Dawn, Michael and his wife Kelly, John and his partner Paddie, and Steven, who will forever hold her in their hearts. Her radiant love extended to her grandchildren, Andrew, Daniel, Henry, Florence, Jack, and Kate, filling their lives with endless affection and joy. Barbie's family circle extended to her dear brother, Bob, and his wife, Sherry, who stood by her side throughout life's journey. She also leaves behind her niece, Jacquie, and her husband, Rob, along with their two children, Josephine and her Fiancé Dylan and son Jake, who brought immense joy to her life. Barbie's nephew, Jimmy, and his wife, Kathryn, were also cherished members of her family.

In addition to her immediate family, Barbie's love and influence touched the lives of her extended family members, including her nieces Sandra and her husband Mike, Kate, Jennifer, and Julie and her husband Dave, as well as her niece Lisa. Their bonds of kinship were strengthened by the love and warmth Barbie shared with them.

In 1965, after numerous summer spent at the family cottage on Buffalo Pound Lake, Barbie, and her parents relocated to Kelowna, BC, where she attended Kelowna High School. It was there that she became known as a vibrant and spirited individual, taking on leadership roles such as head cheerleader and president of coed. It was also during her time at KHS that she crossed paths with the love of her life, Ken.

Barbie's passion for fashion and design led her to pursue her dreams at the Bassett School of Fashion and Interior Design in Portland in 1967. Her talent and dedication propelled her career, and in 1970, she became the division manager of Sears in Kelowna, making her the youngest manager to fulfill such a role. Her eye for style and detail allowed her to create stunning interiors that left a lasting impression on the Okanagan Valley. Notable projects included the School House Pub, Baxter's Pub, McCulloch Station Pub, Harvest Golf Club, and Sun Rivers Golf Club in Kamloops. Barbie's expertise also extended to major developments such as Talus Ridge and Kirschner Mountain. She generously lent her skills to numerous individuals, assisting them with the interior design of their personal homes. Barbie's love for her community was exemplified through her involvement in various charitable events and organizations. She wholeheartedly dedicated herself to the Kelowna Regatta, Lady of the Lake, Kelowna Mardi Gras, Ladies' Night Out with the Kelowna Firemen, Heart of Gold Foundation, Daffodil Ball, and numerous other events for the KGH Foundation. Her passion for giving back extended to the Centennial Mercantile, where she took great pleasure in handpicking items for the gift shop in the hospital, ensuring a delightful experience for patients and visitors alike.

Beyond her professional accomplishments and philanthropic endeavors, Barbie found joy and contentment in her personal life. In 1972, she and Ken exchanged vows and embarked on a journey together. They purchased a picturesque acreage in the Joe Rich Valley, where they built a beautiful log home for their four boys. They also opened a charming bed and breakfast, as well as an antique shop known as the Joe Rich Mercantile. Barbie's love for fashion blossomed in the early eighties when she joined forces with her friend Dianne Friesen to create RAF Promotions, producing numerous fashion shows, most notably the fashion show at Expo 86.

In the year 2000, Barbie and Ken embarked on a new chapter of their lives, moving their family home down to our beautiful Okanagan Lake. This move allowed Barbie to fulfill her dream of becoming "Grandma on the Lake," a role she cherished dearly. The lake house became a haven for love and togetherness, where Barbie hosted countless large family gatherings, that created lasting memories for generations to come. Alongside Ken, Barbie also embarked on exciting adventures with her brother Bob and his wife Sherry. Together they shared an Airstream trailer, journeying across the breathtaking landscapes as well as the the vibrant cities and charming small towns of Canada and the USA. These shared experiences brought them closer together, deepening their bonds and creating treasured moments that would forever hold a special place in their hearts.

Today, as we mourn the loss of Barbie Dean Ross, we celebrate the vibrant and passionate life she led. Her creative talents, philanthropic spirit, and unwavering dedication to her family and community have left an indelible mark on all who knew her. Barbie's memory will forever be treasured, and her legacy of love and inspiration will continue to live on.

Barbie’s family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated staff at the Kelowna Cancer Clinic and the Palliative Care Program. Their unwavering compassion and support throughout Barbie’s journey was truly incredible. The exceptional care she received from these healthcare professionals not only eased her physical discomfort but also provided solace to her entire family towards the end of her life. Barbie’s family is eternally grateful for the comfort and peace they brought to their beloved Barbie in her final days. Barbie Dean Ross, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, auntie, daughter, sister, and friend, has left a void that can never be filled. May her soul find eternal peace, and may her love continue to buzz in your heart like the queen bee that she was!

There will be a viewing at Everden Rust on June 4th from 7-9 PM. A celebration of Barbie's life will be held on June 5th at 1 PM at Trinity Church. Family, friends, and all whose lives have been touched by Barbie are welcome to join and pay their respects. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Kelowna General Hospital Foundation in Barbie's honour. It is asked for everyone attending to do so in colour, to match Barbie’s colourful spirit! If you cannot attend in person there will be a live stream available. The link will be posted to Barbie’s website at the address below. The internment is open to all and will be held on June 6th at 10:30 AM at Kelowna Memorial Park Cemetery. If you would like to leave Barbie a message in the cloud, and for the live stream link, please go to www.queenbeelove.buzz

My condolences to the Ross family for the loss of Barbie, I grew up in Joe rich right down the road from the Ross family and always remember a fondness of the family congrigating for meals and having alot of fun riding the half pipe ramp Ken had made us. Barbie would often pick us up from black mountain school in her country squire station wagon which was a good memory we had so much fun Ryan , Mike and I. Barbie was so nice and an amazing lady in my life then. She will be forever missed and thoughts of her embedded in my childhood. Forever in our hearts she will be missed. - Mark Beaulieu - Mark Beaulieu

Sending my heartfelt condolences to the Ross family. I attended school with Ryan from kindergarten to grade 12 and have fond memories of Barbie through those years. Thinking back now, her love for her boys was clearly evidenced by all the time, energy and unmatched enthusiasm she put into any school related activities.

That love and care went beyond her family. Later in life whenever I would cross paths with Barbie, she always showed genuine interest to see me. I know she did with everyone whose lives she touched.

I hope Ken, the boys and their respective families can find comfort in the memories shared by so many of the vibrant, kind and loving soul Barbie was, and how she reflected that right back to her community. She will be truly missed and my thoughts are with you all. - Leslie Schwartz

Our heartfelt Condolences go out to the Ross Family,

Barbie’s vivacious, creative and generous spirit has definitely left its mark on our family. My husband Ward first met Barbie through their mutual connection with Voyager RV and the Friesen family. We would later meet Barbie out in the community at the many functions she generously contributed to. Meeting at the Olympic torch bearing ceremony, finally making the connection that one of OKM’s finest and most influential teachers was indeed her son, Mike Ross.

The time we spent together while Barbie helped us renovate our condo, was such a treat for me. It was such a collaborative process, where she shared her talent and her friendship…I’ll forever be grateful and inspired by having known her. Our love to your family. - Connie and Ward Fraser

Ken, the boys and family, you're so fortunate to have the wonderful unstoppable Barbie for a wife, a mother, a mother-in-law, a grandmother, a friend, a confidante, an ideal, the real deal, I could go on and on. I was sorry to have missed her when she left with Kelsey before I got there, so great to see you KR. I just finished watching the service so I was able to laugh and cry with everyone. Lots of love to you all. Her granddaughter did an amazing straight-from-the-heart eulogy.

Barbie was a bundle of energy and ideas, she affected so many of us who came in contact with her and she certainly changed my life. I moved to Kelowna back in 1966 and joined Teen Town to meet people and learned very soon that Barbie held court and many social events were orchestrated by her. She taught me to be myself and not worry about what others thought and to become my best me.

In later years we met on projects and always enjoyed the repartee we shared. Barbie was loved by those she served and on one occasion she and I met at a mutual clients home to visit before he passed away. Her love for others was always illustrated by her going that extra mile. Rest In Peace Barbie, many will speak your name long after you are gone.

Love and condolences to Ken and family. - Stew Turcotte

    KR and family,

The world, and especially Kelowna was a much richer place because of Barbie. When Barbie was a in a room she owned “it”. Her colourful personality, sense of style, vision, joy of life, and concern for others made her an unstoppable force of nature. Barbie’s love of family, friends and community is part of an admirable legacy.

I had the pleasure of being apart of the bridge club, a group of strong and vivacious women, Barbie of course being the Queen Bee. We had many laughs and adventures on our annual trip to Spokane or Okanagan Lake Resort. We had many laughs, discussions and Barbie contributed so much to the group.

Barbie has touched and influenced so many, she will be missed. Janet Fisher

Dear KR and the Ross Clan and Bob and the Elliott Clan:

We are so saddened by this news. We met back in the '60s, so many good times and memories. Best wedding reception ever: on the Fintry Queen, stuck on the S. side of the bridge which wouldn't open. Fun, fun, fun!, but not for Jack funding the bar tab. LOL. KR & Barbie were model parents in Joe Rich, raising 4 awesome young men and somehow always having time for friends: the barn, the log home, skating parties, open door policy...they didn't know they were virtual mentors to me over the years...always instinctively knowing what to do, when, what to say with appropriate timing. Thank you! Fashion shows: Barbie and Diane somehow got me to model (way out of my comfort zone), but when Barbie called, no was not an option. We looked after the cottage till she and KR were ready to make it their Beach House home. It was the site of the best pig roast party we ever got to host. We always admired Barbie's energy and determination in all that she undertook and always excelled at. She was very outgoing, personable, and loving; a people person with incredibly artistic skills and great generosity. Even last Fall as we were planning to visit Kelowna before leaving the country again, she insisted we be at the Beach House and would have been prepared to host a BBQ, despite all the health battles she had so bravely endured over the last few years! We are grateful for the time shared last October and also grateful we will get to remotely attend Barbie's celebration of life. Oh Barbie, just in case nobody's told you... ya done good Gal! RIP Barbie Dean the Beauty Queen. KR and family, you're in our thoughts every day.

Love always, Fish & Francine - Al Fisher & Francine Côté

Remembering Barbie from when she had her boys on 3West at KGH. She definitely was the “Queen”, holding court in her room. She always remembered us when we would see her years later. With deepest sympathy for your loss. Wendy - Wendy Crawford

This is ironic to a degree. We spent much of our childish years together in the neighbourhood from 1 yr to 8 when my family moved to Bernard Ave which seemed like another world from Ethel to Burn. Over the years we saw each other occasionally and reminisced about our past. I won't go into our past with Nobby Wilderman not in the same room.

Over the many years I was fortunate to meet your wife, see your new home in Joe Riche and Barbie. Today, as I read the responses to Barbie's passing, I go back in my past of about 10 years ago when my wife went thru the same events. I am sorry that you and your family must go thru this, but you will never forget her..... forever. - Monty Hughes

Dear Ken, Ryan, Mike, John, Steven and Family,

Mrs. Ross (Barbie) is a legend. As a child growing up in Rutland - I was one of the lucky children who was honoured to know her through the Kelowna Aqua Jets, Rutland Youth Soccer and life.

Mrs. Ross brought an amazing level of positivity to a room and always made people feel welcomed. I have fond memories of Mrs. Ross - her smile, her fashion BUT especially her eye glasses. I have no idea how many pairs she owned but it seemed she had a pair for every day of the year.

I will forever remember her smile and her hugs. I had not seen Mrs. Ross in many years and I was walking downtown. Mrs. Ross was with Mr. Ross and the Kitsch Family and I suddenly heard my name being yelled from across the road. I looked over and it was Mrs. Ross waving me over - this warmed my heart and I crossed the road to open arms of a hug.

Remember all the good times - she definitely had a well lived life.

Barbie had a special magic of enabling all those she came in contact with to feel special. The Valley and will continue to shine: she has left behind her a better place because of her time here. So sorry for the emptiness left in her wake. Seek to fill that space with the warmth that Barbie embodied. She truly was a special person who is gone too soon. Much love to all who were very close.

I met this "dynamic" woman years ago through an old friend, Barbie was a whirlwind , full of ideas and more spunk than anyone I ever met. She was a wonderful person and she and Diane did so much fun stuff together that made me envious! Fashion was not my thing but It sure was for them and they did it with a real flair.

My sincere condolences to her family.

Barbie was such a dynamo. Volunteering, for most of us, didn’t understand the question….but Barbie always understood the question & got it done! The day she arrived in Kelowna, the lights shone a little brighter, her fashion sense, and design style was always on….

Kenny and family, my condolences, to all….Barbie will be missed, but remembered, and much loved by so many in the community….
