POELZER, Helen

POELZER, Helen

POELZER: Helen. It is with sadness and sorrow that we announce the passing of Helen Poelzer on Jan. 19, 2021. She was 97 years old with little more than a month of reaching her 98th birthday. Helen was born in St. Benedict, Saskatchewan on Feb. 26, 1923 and was the last surviving member, of a family of 11 brothers and sisters. She spent most of her adult life in B.C. with the last 66 years in Kelowna.

She was married to William (Bill) Poelzer who predeceased her in 1996. They had 1 son, 4 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Helen is survived by son, William (Bill) Poelzer (Lynn) whom reside in Calgary. The 4 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren also reside in Alberta. Arienne Corben (Russell) Talia, Aria and Mattea, Ryan Poelzer (Bren-Ann) Benjamin and Gavin, Jesse Poelzer Jaxon and Tristan and Tawny Bray, (Steven).

Helen worked in the downtown Kelowna Safeway for over 25 years. She truly enjoyed her work experience. She was an outgoing individual that loved interacting with customers and fellow employees. Helen and her husband Bill were active socially and enjoyed golfing, bowling and other social outings with their long-time friends. Helen took up golf later in life and excelled at the game and managed to get two holes in one; no easy feat, especially when playing the beautiful Kelowna Golf and County Club course. Just prior to her husband’s passing, they bought a condominium in the Wedgewood complex.

Helen lived on her own in her condo and was totally independent right up till her 97th birthday. She suffered a stroke and eventually ended up in the Cottonwoods Care Centre. Helen’s strength was her positive attitude and her unwavering faith in a greater power. The family wants to thank Doctors Canning and Hopman, the staff at KGH along with a special thanks to the caregivers at Cottonwoods. Helen had a special relationship with the Cottonwoods staff, and due to their love and care she managed to gain almost another year of fruitful life.

A Mass at Immaculate Conception Church and inurnment at the Kelowna Memorial Park Cemetery will be announced at a later date.

Condolences can be sent to the family by visiting www.firstmemorialfuneralkelowna.com, and in lieu of flowers, please make donations to the B.C. Cancer Fund.
