NORTH, Helen Jean (nee Wentworth)

NORTH, Helen Jean (nee Wentworth)

It is with deep sadness we share that our beautiful mom, grandma (Gma), auntie, passed away July 29, 2021. Helen was born in Edmonton, September 5, 1928. Our hearts are heavy but the incredible memories of this funny, caring, supportive, intuitive, and loving lady are simply filling us up!

Helen was predeceased by husband Joseph (Ab) in 2007, her parents Nell and George Wentworth, and her brother Walter and sister Eileen (Killips).

Helen grew up in Edmonton and Alberta Beach. Helen enjoyed going to school, but at a young age, she needed to stay home and help her family. Helen met Ab in 1948 at a dance and they would marry in 1950. Ab was in the RCAF and they were stationed in Edmonton, Vancouver, Whitehorse, Germany, and back to Edmonton. After 20 years (1966), Ab retired from the Air Force and the family moved to Rutland. Helen and Ab owned North’s Corner Grocery from ’68-‘72. Helen was member of the Rutland Lions Ladies for many years. She also worked in retail in Rutland. Helen was active and sports minded all her life. She was one of the first people to obtain a Parkinson pool membership when it opened in 1972 and she swam every morning until her early 80’s. Helen had a lifetime membership to the pool.

Helen was known for her enjoyment of spending time with family and friends. She always had baking, canning and a quick meal to share with whomever popped by. Her door was open to anyone who needed a chat or a place to stay. She had a way of making “everyone” feel welcome, safe, and loved…….oh, and well fed! Mom loved to sew, knit, crochet and embroidery and there are many fine products out there in friends and family households. Helen’s favorite thing was to spend time with her children and grandchildren. She was willing to travel to any location to visit and help out when needed. Mom and Dad traveled as far north as Fort Nelson, west to Smithers, and south to Oregon to see family.

Helen is survived by her 3 children; Jay (Sherry), Grant (Brenda), Kim (Doug), and 7 grandchildren; Erin (Lawrence), Joel, Sarah, Mitchell (Justin), Craig, Tyler (Mirranda), and Jared.

Mom’s quick wit and sometimes “no filter” is what set her apart from many. We will miss her terribly. But if you did meet her, take a minute to remember “that one time Helen/Mrs. North…….” and maybe share that memory with us.

The family would like to send our gratitude to all the staff at Brookhaven Care Center for the excellent care given to Mom.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Everden Rust Funeral home, on Saturday, May 21, 2022, at 12 PM, with Rev. Roy Kemp Officiating. For those who are unable to attend in person, please visit the live-stream link below:

Jay, Grant and Kim, we have many memories of being with your family at the small Air Force centre in Edmonton, at Alberta Beach and our visits after here in Kelowna. Ab and Helen were always caring and hospitable, we were fortunate to have them as mentors when we were just starting out in life away from home. We will miss them. Kim and all members of Helen's Family. We are so sad to learn of Helen's passing - Helen was and always will remain thee most amazing personality to us. As her friend and esthetician she taught me so many life lessons; a big part of the strong woman I am is due to Helen's "no filter advice"!! Gabriele enjoyed her visits for her hair styling - we will never forget Helen and hold her memory dear in our hearts!

To Helen's Family: My sincere condolences to you all. I first met Helen 40 years ago when she would shop in the store I worked in. We had many a good chat and I realized quite quickly that I had been meant to meet this incredible lady. She invited me to come to a meditation group that she was a part of. I continued seeing Helen over the years and always enjoyed her wit and intuitive vision. I feel blessed to having known Helen and will always remember her with great fondness and love. Thank you Helen for teaching me the meaning of life and beyond!

    Sincerely; Sue Kabatoff
