MELNICHUK, Mary (Maria)

Mary {Maria} Melnichuk, a long-time resident of Kelowna BC passed away peacefully on Monday, January 29, 2018 at Three Links Manor in Kelowna at the age of 96 years. Mary was born on November 12, 1921 in Ceblow, Poland to John and Melania Werhun. She emigrated to Canada in 1938 with her mother and three brothers; Bill, Andy and Harry, to meet her dad in British Columbia who was working for the C.N.R. on the Railroad. Mary was predeceased by her beloved husband of 59 years, Makar Melnichuk. In 1947 they purchased a 20 acre Orchard in Ellison, and farmed it until 1981. Shortly thereafter, they retired to Kelowna to enjoy gardening, bowling, card playing, travelling and spending more good times with the family. Mary was one of the founding members to establish the Ukrainian Greek Orthodox Church in Kelowna, beginning in 1957. In 1992 the Ukrainian Canadian Congress presented a certificate of recognition to Makar and Mary Melnichuk in appreciation of the dedicated contributions to Ukrainian cultural, religious and community life in the Kelowna area. Mary will be sadly missed by her three sons: John (Lydia) and granddaughter, Christina; Mike (Priscilla) and their children; Janice (Dave) Walters and great granddaughter Sarah; Kathy (Rik) Blok; and Norman (Tasha); Roy, and granddaughter Jay-lin. The family would like to thank Dr. Williams and the staff at Three Links Manor for her wonderful care. Relatives and friends are invited to Prayers at Saints Peter & Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church, 1935 Barlee Road, Kelowna on Thursday, February 8, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Services will be held at Saints Peter & Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church on Friday, February 9, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be held at Lakeview Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
