MCCARTHY, Jack (Rodney Jackson)

MCCARTHY, Jack (Rodney Jackson)

Jack passed away peacefully at Central Okanagan Hospice House on June 23, 2018 at the age of 75. Jack leaves to mourn his wife of 53 years Marion, sons Jayson (Kim) and Cal (Laurel), and daughters Shannon (Ash) and Marni (Chris), many grandchildren and a very large extended family.
Jack had many careers in his life. Recording artist/musician, plumber, orchardist, rancher, businessman; but first and foremost, Jack was a community builder. His endeavors are visible throughout the community of Lake Country, not only manifest in the many years that he published The Calendar, Lake Country

Jack was Mr. Lake Country to many. His commitment to the community was widespread. Through the Calendar he connected us to activities, to organizations, and to one another. George Elliot students in particular benefitted from his support both financially and for some through the opportunity to write a weekly column in the paper. Some of these young writers went on to careers in journalism. His efforts will be remembered by students and staff alike.

    My condolences to the family.

We knew Jack and Marion well. Special thoughts to you Marion --(one of KGH's great volunteers) as you begin a new journey in your life. Jack was instrumental in making Winfield and Lake Country the best place to live because of his commitments to ensuring it was (IS) the best. He had a great sense of humour and was so hospitable every time I went into the Calendar office to discuss "something"! We are so lucky to have the park and the community complex, particularly the theatre, and everything else that he cared about. Special thoughts to you all as you remember a great husband, Dad, granddad and friend and outstanding citizen of Lake Country.

Sincere condolences to all the members of the Jack McCarthy family in the loss of your loved one. I met Jack in 1980 shortly after we became residents of Oyama as a result of having two sons who played Minor Hockey. Rod played on the same team as Jayson in some years & I served on the executive of Minor Hockey when Jack was also serving on it. May all your cherished memories of him be of great comfort to you & ease the pain & heartache of all your losses.

Marion and family, I first met Jack in the late 80s with the Winfield Old-timer hockey. It was a rich experience involving families, Xmas parties, golf and curling events. In recent years I got to know another Jack. The farmer, plumber, cattleman, singer, newsman, race horse breeder, golf entrepreneur, baseball player, community personality extraordinaire, and family man. What a life. We will miss you. Rest in peace Jack.

I am very sad to hear of Jack's passing. Condolences to his family. I remember the first time I met Jack. We had a meeting where Jack had this idea to take a fledgling community newsletter and turn it into a full-blown weekly newspaper. I worked as a compositor for Vernon Interior Printers at the time and thought "good luck" with that. He was fiercely passionate about the idea and his enthusiasm was contagious. We worked together with a great group of volunteers putting ideas together and suddenly the first edition hit the streets of Winfield. He was so proud. And we were proud of him. I've thought about him often over the years.

Jack was an amazing man, he was a passionate man about the Lake Country area. I knew Jack all of my life and admired the way he got his point across, without him Lake Country would not be the vibrant and great place to live that it is. During my 35 years at the Regional District of Central Okanagan Jack and I had some very interesting discussions. He inspired me a lot and I thank him for that. He will be missed.
