HEWLETT, Judith (Judy) Marie

July 2, 1941 - August 7, 2022

Judith Marie Hewlett went to be with her Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, on August 7, 2022 at the age of 81 in the hospice at Ocean Front Village in Courtenay, BC after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Judy was born to Robert and Geraldine Armfield on July 2, 1941 in Calgary, Alberta. Judy is survived by Larry Hewlett, her loving husband of 43 years and two children Robyn (Yaremchuk) Fyfe (Scot) of Royston and Terry Yaremchuk of Mission. She also leaves behind her brother Paul Armfield (Sharman) of Edmonton, and six grandchildren: Jessica Kaltenberger (Brian), Candy Lackie (Greyson), Andrew Lackie and Evan, Layne and Travis Fyfe as well as six great grandchildren.

Judy grew up in Calgary and the family moved to Edmonton midway through her final year of school. After graduating she lived in Waterton Lake, Canmore, Banff, and Jasper in Alberta and Golden, Kelowna, Peachland and Royston in British Columbia. Her cherished childhood memories were of family times at grandpa's house and at the family cabin Jumpingpound Creek. Another favourite pastime was recording nursery rhymes on cassettes for her grandchildren. She couldn't see them in person as much as she would have liked so she made up for the missed time by lulling them to sleep at night with her voice. To this day her grandchildren treasure those moments with her before they drift off to sleep.

Her hobbies were painting, curling, golf, x-country skiing, hiking, gardening, cooking, and bird watching. When she turned 65, she enrolled in the Fine Arts Program at UBCO in Kelowna. Judy was a lifelong learner and appreciated this opportunity. Although she was the 'senior' student in many of her classes she used her wit and humour to bridge the gap. Judy's honesty and integrity always shone through making it easy to accept her. She and her oldest granddaughter both made the Dean's List at their respective school in the same year. Judy was an active member of the Peachland Art Group for 20 years as treasurer. She was often asked to take on these roles because of her dedication, organization and commitment. She had a giving spirit and loved to help out and offer her skills when needed. She was involved in may Bible study groups and most recently one that involved an intensive study of the book of Revelation. Judy was excited for this study as she felt God was preparing her for this final journey to meet her Lord.

The family would like to extend their thanks for the special care she received after her diagnosis: Cancer Care staff and Dr. Nikova at Comox Valley Hospital, staff at the Comox Valley Hospice at Ocean Front Village and a special thanks to Dr. Colin Bullock for his dedication and considerate care during her last year.

In lieu of flowers, which Judy loved, she wished that donations be made in her name to her favourite charities: Comox Valley Pregnancy Care Centre, Comox Valley Hospice Society and the Canadian Cancer Society.

A Celebration of Life Service for Judy will be held on August 27, 2022 at 1:00 PM at Courtenay Fellowship Baptist Church, 2963 Lake Trail Road, Courtenay, BC.

We loved Judy! We knew her for many years and shared many hours at bible study.

Judy shared with us “My Life so far” story and we were with her in thought through these last years of her suffering. Two water colour paintings remind us daily of her vibrant personality.

Judy was a good friend. You could count on her for a honest opinion, often bringing a smile to your face as her answers were always delivered with wit and laced with humour. We will miss her wisdom. We are still enjoying her painting of a huge owl on the wall of our shed at the cabin.

I know Judy lived and died believing these words from my favourite song: “ In Christ alone my hope is found.”. Our sincere condolences to Larry and family.
