Funeral Homes Submit ObituaryHENKEL, Edwin Ed Willi

December 17, 1939 – November 20, 2023
It is with great sadness and a deep love that we announce the loss of Edwin "Ed" Henkel, who passed away peacefully on November 20, 2023, at the age of 83.
He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Evelyn; daughters Della (David) and Debbie; grandchildren Cory, Simon, and Paige; sister Margaret Werger; and his nieces and nephews. Ed was predeceased by his parents, Martha and William Henkel, and brother Werner Henkel.
Ed was an outgoing person who loved to help people, and was an active volunteer in his church and community. He and Evelyn raised their family in Glenmore, Kelowna, BC, where he was born and lived all of his life. There, he subdivided family land, and built a number of homes. They also ran an orchard, distributing apples throughout BC. Ed was civic minded, helping to create the Glenmore Residents Society. He served on the city planning commission, agricultural commission, and the RCMP citizens patrol. After retirement, Ed became known as "the can man", collecting cans and bottle to support children in need.
Ed will be dearly missed by everyone whose lives he touched.

Evelyn and Family, it has taken me a day or two to digest that Ed is no longer with us. From grade five in Glenmore Elementary to sharing time at Rockets games, Ed has been a part of my fife. I remember time spent wandering the hills (now known as Wilden) as teenagers, terrifying the wildlife but rarely doing much harm. Hiking in the summer, hockey in the winter, times were great back then. Not many of the "wild bunch" left now. We worked hard and played hard but I remember those times fondly. I hope all the years you had with Ed will carry you through this loss. May God grant you peace knowing he is now pain free. God Bless. - Gord Strachan - Nov 22, 2023

Dear Evelyn & Family! Our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this difficult time. Ed was such an incredible example of what being community minded is all about. The “unofficial” Mayor of Glenmore. A man with a huge caring and compassionate heart who liked to put others first. Grateful to have had the opportunity to know Ed and to create so many great memories. He was such a great encourager and teacher who loved his family. Thanks also to Evelyn for being such an incredible supportive wife. Ed built many homes and is now getting the chance to spend time with his personal Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ in his new Heavenly mansion. Please accept our sincere condolences. Gone however not forgotten! Blessings, Ron, Cindy and the Cannan Family - Ron & Cindy Cannan - Nov 21, 2023

I am sorry to hear of Ed's passing but know he is with his Lord and Saviour. After meeting Ed, through my wife's family I was privileged to spend many a night in the COP car hearing the many stories of his growing up in Glenmore. He took great pride in showing his driver's license with his birth place as GLENMORE. As we patrolled through Wildon, he shared stories of driving his "jalopy" through the hills and fields. I treasure the time we spent together as Citizens on Patrol. - Mark and Ingrid Pinchin - Nov 21, 2023

I am so very sorry to hear of Ed’s passing. I grew up next door to Ed and Evelyn and I would follow Ed around to see what projects he had going on. I could hear his tractor coming from a mile away and every once in a while he would let me drive it. Ed is a true inspiration of what can be accomplished with hard work and a great work ethic. Rest in peace Ed and never stop tinkering! - Ryan Harrison - Nov 21, 2023

Evelyn, my heart goes out to you as you mourn the passing of the love of your life. Ed was an incredibly kind and generous man; always offering a helping hand to those in need. I think back to how tirelessly the two of you put my garden to bed the winter Bill was in the hospital and how you came and helped renovate the “dope house”. Ed is now with the saints who have gone before him. “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
