HARVIE, Ken

HARVIE, Ken

Ken passed away on Wednesday, July 31, 2019 at the age of 65. He leaves behind his loving wife of almost 45 years, Gwen Harvie; daughters Shannon Harvie (James McNeice) and Margaret (Chris) Werry; grandchildren Conner, Taylor, Jaxson, Finnley, and Brielle Werry, and Brogan and Kenna McNeice; sister Eileen Galarneau; brothers Alex Harvie and David Harvie.
Ken was raised on the orchards of East Kelowna, BC and returned to raise his own family there after working as an Assistant Forest Ranger with the BC Forest Service. In addition to his career as an orchardist, he served the South East Kelowna community as a member, and later as Chief, of the South East Kelowna (Station 7) Fire Department and as a long-time member of the SEKID board. He took great joy in camping and boating with family, was a motorcyclist and snowmobiler, and after his retirement in 2017 traveled, with his wife, in his fifth wheel trailer. He was grateful for the kindness and professionalism of his doctors, nurses and extended health team, who were a great support for him and his family. In particular, the nurses at the Central Okanagan Hospice House were a tremendous support to Ken and his family.
A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, August 8, 2019, at 1:00 pm, at Springfield Funeral Home, 2020 Springfield Road, Kelowna, BC. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, www.cancer.ca and the Central Okanagan Hospice Association (COHA), hospicecoha.org. Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.springfieldfuneralhome.com.

    Dear Gwen, Shannon and Marg:
    Please accept my condolences for your huge loss. You don't know me, because I was Ken's close friend from Grade 1 up to Grade 4 when we moved across the Mission Creek ravine that seemed so far then. I saw him a few times when he was in his 20's and he was building a career. I'm sure he will be missed so much by everyone and especially you, his immediate family. The ravine he has crossed now is so much wider but I know he's still there. He was such a down-to-earth friend who always smiled. His mom was our teacher. For a while they felt almost like family when I would go over and visit.
    Please accept the Gevers' condolences to the Harvie family in this time of losing a great man.

I know Rudy knew him for years as a fellow Orchardist. He was a great person and certainly will be missed.

    Gwen and family,
    Sincere condolences. We are shocked by Ken's sudden passing and we are reminded that our hold on this life is very tenuous. Ken has always been a pillar of support for the community. We were introduced to Ken and family through SEKVFD and fondly remember Ken for his tireless activities as Fire Chief for this area, always putting the community first and instilling this philosophy on its members.

    Gwen, Shannon, Marg, Eileen, Alex and David;
    I send sincere condolences, Ken was an excellent example of a community man. As Trustee at the local water purveyor for 23 years, he was always making decisions with the grower community in mind. He never took the easy choice, always the correct one, and as Trustee and Chairman he led by example. We would do well in society with a few more men like Ken. Cherish the memories, and hug each other often.

All of these which made up and built our community in East Kelowna. Thank you Ken for all you did...we are truly grateful.
