HAMLIN, Edward J

Edward completed his journey on this earth at age 87 on Sept. 6th, 2023 at the Vernon Jubilee Hospital from COPD complications. Ed was born in Port Arthur (Thunder Bay), Ontario on August 20th, 1936 the 5th eldest child of 18 children, to parents George & Lucine Hamlin.
Edward is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, S. Lorie Hamlin, his daughter Katherine Hamlin & step-daughter Chantelle Mailer (husband Darryl Bennett). Ed is predeceased by both his parents, his son Michael Hamlin & daughter Lorraine Allen. His son, Michael is survived by his wife Helen Hamlin & their 3 girls: Lisa (Julio) Soza; Jessica (Jason) deLeeuw; Melanie (Matt) Brown. His daughter, Lorraine Allen is survived by her 4 children: twins - Jamie (Jean) Gerbrandt & Jason (Candice) Gerbrandt; Sarah Allen (Brendan Cook); Joshua (Shelby) Allen. His only surviving daughter, Katherine Hamlin has 3 daughters Maighan (Shaun) James; Lanna Marshall (Adam Collins); Kaylee (James) Walsh. Ed was very proud of his 10 grandchildren & 26 great grandchildren. He cherished his family deeply & will be lovingly remembered by all.
Of his 18 siblings, there are 7 surviving: Jack Hamlin; Charles (Suzanne) Hamlin; David (Wendy) Hamlin; Terry Hamlin; Susan Hamlin; twins – Margaret Blaszzio & Jim Hamlin, a brother in law Larry Woodbeck & Barbara MacLeod, along with numerous nieces, nephews & cousins. Edward was predeceased by siblings: Georgina McClellan; Don Hamlin; Fred Hamlin; George Hamlin; Rose Bergman; Phil Hamlin; Norman Hamlin; Doris Woodbeck; Linda Clarke; Larry Hamlin and inlaws Myles McClellan; Mabel Hamlin; Phylis Hamlin; Debbie Hamlin; Mario Blaszzio; Don Bergman & Margaret Hamlin.
At the very young age of 17, Edward joined the Army & became a Princess Patricia's paratrooper out of Currie Barracks in Calgary, Alberta. After a honorable release, he joined Canada Post as a letter carrier in early 1957. He was later elected to the full-time position of Secretary/Treasurer of the Letter Carriers Union of Canada in Calgary, Alberta and retired in 1994. Ed was appointed as an adjudicator to the Alberta Worker's Compensation Board from 1995-97.
Edward was a very active volunteer in his community serving on the board of the First Calgary Credit Union; the United Way of Canada; was a member of the Moose Lodge, the Heritage Club & a 51 year member with the Royal Canadian Legion where he was elected for 8 years as President of the Jubilee Br. 286 in Calgary. Then was elected to the position of District Commander for 5 years representing 23 branches in the Alberta Provincial Command. For his dedicated service to the Legion, he was awarded a life time membership, a Medal of Merit (MSM), the Palm Leaf & a 50 year medal. For his overall volunteer community service Ed was awarded the Governor General's Medal in 1992.
In 1998, Ed & Lorie moved to Vernon, BC for the weather, became RV'ers and traveled south to Arizona & Mexico for many years following the sunshine. They enjoyed many adventures, as Edward was quick to find friends with his constant smile, his booming voice and his great sense of humor. Ed loved his darts, playing pool, and took up singing karaoke & golfing after retirement. While Ed had never been a pet person, he became very fond of their feline traveling companions in his later years.
Edward lived a full & rewarding life, leaving an impression on many hearts and will be greatly missed by family members & numerous friends.
A heartfelt Thank you to the doctors, nurses and staff at the Vernon Jubilee Hospital and the kind, caring, & supportive team at the Noric House.
There will be a Celebration of Life, date, time & place to be announced at a later date.
