GUBBELS, Frederick Joseph

It is with profound sorrow that we announce the death of our cherished husband, father, grandfather, father-in-law, brother, brother-in-law, uncle and friend. Fred passed away at home on August 22, 2017. At his side were his loving wife of 50 years, Penny, and his beloved children, Steven and Karen. Fred was predeceased by his parents, Gerard & Elizabeth Gubbels, brothers Lawrence, Tony and John and sister Dodie Gogo, sister-in-law Milla Gubbels, brothers-in-law Ron Ekstrom and Ken Gogo and nephew Grant McKelvie. He is survived by his children Steven (Julia) and Karen (Randy Ellis) and his treasured grandchildren, Erika, Abby, Lauren and Krista. Fred

We were so fortunate to have you in our family. So many good memories and so much effort by Fred to allow our families the great times together. Always the instigator of fun. Fred made every effort to ensure everyone felt included. A very special quality. We will always be grateful how he was there for our family when loved ones were lost. I remember as a young child he gathered all the kids up and let us ask questions and help us through a sad time. He was a speaker for our family, be it memorable eulogies or at reunions. Dear Penny & Family,

There are some special people you never forget. Fred was one of these. Years ago, Fred & I played fastball together for a few years on a "Teachers' Team". He was not only a fine athlete but more importantly a genuine sportsman.

We also crossed paths in our career during inter-school sporting competition.

As others have said - Fred was a caring positive person thus an unforgettable coach to so many. His gift to others lives on.

Fred was the consummate professional to all his past colleagues in SD#23. He was a great sportsman. No matter what sport he took up or coached, he was excellent at. However, where Fred excelled the most was being a family man. He was extremely proud of Karen and Steven and loved his grandchildren like no other. Penny, his bride for 50 years, was his sole mate. He was a cherished friend for over 44 years and Marilyn and I will miss him terribly.

I was a student of Mr. Gubbels' back in Grade 7 at South Kelowna Elementary in 1971/72. He made it one of my most satisfying school years, due to his willingness to teach students rather than teaching curriculum. So very sorry to hear of his passing.

Mr. Gubbels was my favourite teacher. I had the honour of being a student of his in Grade 4, 1973-4, at Ellison Elementary (off of Old Vernon Rd, not far from Reid's Corner). I loved school and was called "teacher's pet" by my fellow pupils. I am not sure if this was true ;)

Penny, I met you at H2O a few years ago and we chatted sometimes in the hot tub. I wish you the best, and please know that we are all thinking of you. Someone like Mr. Gubbels will never be forgotten. An advanced, wise soul. The gates of Heaven are ringing and the angels are singing, rejoicing in such a kind soul coming home to rest for awhile until he may decide to go back and help the earth again, like he helped so many us in this lifetime.

Fred Gubbles was my seventh grade teacher at South Kelowna Elementary. I still remember the first day he wrote his name on the board and said, "I know it sounds like bubbles but if you say that you're going to get into troubles!" Fred was a major influence on my life back when I was 13 years old. I visited Fred about 20 years after this when my father bought some hay from him. He remembered me! He was my first male elementary school teacher and the one I remember the most.

Only once have I met Fred and Penny. That was back in the late 1970s. I was traveling on my own from Calgary to Victoria and, at the urging of Fred's mom, Liza, Fred and Penny welcomed me - a distant relative who they'd never met - into their home for the night. I left the next morning to continue my journey. I've never forgotten this kind and generous gesture. Now, upon learning of Fred's passing, I'd like to convey my condolences to you, Penny, your children, and to the extended Gubbels family.

We are so sorry to learn of Fred's passing. We only got to know the Gubbel family when they moved into Mission Breeze and shortly thereafter we moved out. Sorry to hear of Fred's passing. Fred taught me to shoot my first basketball at South Kelowna Elementary. Some of the best memories was playing Wallyball at the Corplex against him, Penny, Keith and Debbie. It was almost impossible to get the ball past him. I'm sorry to hear of Mr. Gubbel's passing. Mr. Gubbels was my teacher at South Kelowna Elementary for several grades and I always felt very fortunate to have had him as a teacher. I remember him as being relaxed, patient and fun. He nicknamed my friend Faith Dorn and I, the Giggle Twins.

One particular memory I have is learning to play volleyball. Mr. Gubbels was our phys-ed teacher and I loved the game but I couldn't serve overhand, so he patiently taught me to stand sideways and make the overhead serve as a sideways motion. I mastered that serve and enjoyed many competitive games in high school and in adult recreational volleyball and I always remembered where I learned the skill from.

Memories of Mr. Gubbels were always in the forefront as I have lived most of my life in S.E. Kelowna and regularly rode my bicycle past his home.

Dear Gubbels family, I will start this by stating that I never knew Fred. I am the second youngest daughter of his cousin Toos Vanden Elzen (Gubbels) in Ontario. Such a tribute to Fred. Obviously a very well-respected man who contributed greatly to his community in so many ways. As I mentioned I never met Fred but fondly remember his father who came to visit us when I was a young(er) girl.. trying to pry pennies from his tightly-closed fist! I also recall visits by his brother Joseph many years ago. Truly a difficult time for your family, but the tributes I have read tell me that he certainly was a wonderful man. Fred was a wonderful counsellor and peer. I often refer to his style of counselling that he had at North Glenmore when I first started teaching. He made regular classroom visits and was always there for students who were struggling. I continue to use his terminology today in the classroom.

My deepest condolences to the family of Fred on his passing. Fred was one of the reasons I stayed in high school and graduated, even though he was the Elementary school counselor. I spent many hours in his office after school receiving wise counsel, and the lessons he taught me are still the ones I use today with him in mind. He was truly a mentor and one of a kind. Fred and I have been lifelong friends. That is to say for the last 55 years. We each went our own ways after graduating together from St Louis College: Fred pursued his career in Kelowna and I stayed on the coast. But we kept in touch from time to time, as good friends do. Before marriage, our wives Penny and Glenda were also friends. They even roomed together for several months. We still smile whenever we think of all the outrageous and fun times we had together, as couples. Those were the days, my friend and indeed, we thought they'd never end. We had even planned a biking holiday together in the Netherlands this Spring. Now all we have is memories - of things past. But at least they are the best of memories. What I remember from our high school days is that Fred excelled at everything. I'm no psychologist, but I'm sure that Fred had an unusually high emotional IQ. Reflecting back on it now, I'm sure his maturity, empathy and understanding were exceptionally well developed, especially for a guy who was the youngest in the class (having skipped a year previously). No wonder everyone wanted to be his friend. And just about everyone was his friend. And no wonder everyone voted for him to be our Class President. We were proud of him then. And we're still proud of him now. Naturally, Fred was also the captain of the schools varsity basketball team. He was honoured with many sports awards, including the annual trophy for MVP, best athlete - or whatever. He was our standard bearer. A consummate, accomplished individual, destined to do well in whatever career he chose. And based on all the nice comments from his students, he went on to become a beloved and respected teacher. It is with the greatest of sadness that I say goodbye to a truly great guy, who I have been honoured to call my friend. And Penny, thank you for being such a wonderful partner for my good friend. Your loss is the greatest and your grief is the deepest. Glenda and I extend our deepest, heartfelt sympathy to you, and to your children.

Fred was a special human being. He was kind, considerate, compassionate, as well as being funny. He had that wonderful sense of humour and loved to smile.

I loved playing 'old timers soccer' with Fred as he was one of those guys who could still run fast and if you gave him a big lead pass on the left wing, he would stretch those long legs and go and score a goal. So much fun!!!!

He was a true gentleman and it was my pleasure to work with such a distinguished professional!!!

I had the privilege of spending a month in Thailand with Fred as our 'fearless leader' of a group of 24 BC teachers on a PAC RIM study tour at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok. His gentle and diplomatic nature served us well in many situations!! And, yes, his wonderful sense of humour made the trip even more enjoyable.

I feel blessed to have known Fred, and my husband, a nurse at Hospice House, was fortunate to care for him in those difficult days. His big heart and even bigger smile will be missed by many.

My deepest condolences on the passing of your husband, dad and grandpa. Mr Gubbels was my teacher for grade 5,6, and 7. I am sure he was sick of me by then..lol. One of my best memories of him is when he took our class downtown for an exhibit, but we had to walk from the Capri to city park. He stopped at Dairy Queen and bought us all a cone. I remember watching him hitting long home runs and stretching doubles into triples, patrolling centerfield and turning triples into flyball outs.

It is with great sadness and humble respect that we honour Fred's passing and his life gifts. He offered such an amazing combination of spirited, humorous enthusiasm and caring wisdom that could lift the souls of those who were fortunate enough to spend time with him. Caring for others and enjoying life seemed so effortless for Fred. He was purposeful about offering appreciation for the efforts of others' hard work and talents, and so often thought of others before himself in his dedication to serving students, colleagues and families in our school district. Despite sometimes adverse conditions he always had a grin on his face and a positive word to say when we encountered him on the cross country ski trails. He will be so greatly missed. The Buna family, was very saddened to hear of Fred's passing. He was a very warm, genuine and caring person who was respected by everyone he met while in the education system in Kelowna. Fred was also a very accomplished athlete who was a joy to play with, and against, in many sports. Saddened to hear of Fred's passing. I taught with him at Dorothea Walker and found him to be an incredible teacher. My deepest condolences to Penny and family.

So sorry to learn of Fred's passing. I saw him a few weeks ago at my granddaughter's soccer game and he seemed so positive about his upcoming treatment. He was always such a positive guy with a smile on his face.

My sincere condolences to Penny and the remainder of Fred's family.
