CHRISTIAN, Michael Wayne

CHRISTIAN, Michael Wayne

August 4, 1951 - November 26, 2021

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our beloved father, Michael Wayne Christian, at the age of 70.

Michael passed away peacefully at home after a year long battle with cancer. He was lovingly surrounded by his long time partner Linda Estabrooks, and his "girls". He is survived by his daughters Ashlee Williams (Jeff), Jessica Christian, Tanys Christian (Brandon), their mother Gail Paterson, and Darcie Ouellette, daughter from previous relationship. His grandchildren Tavyn, Blake, Logan, Keesyn, Chantel, and Jessie. He is also survived by his brother Rick Christian, and sister Diana Clausen (Davey) and many nieces and nephews.

Michael was predeceased by his mother, Evelyn Clausen, father Eric Christian, his brother Mel Christian and sister Sharon McClure.

Michael was born and raised in the Lower Mainland, in his in his early twenties he began his career as a Court Clerk in the Vancouver Courthouse. Mike spent many years moving throughout the province as he advanced in his career. He and his family settled in Kelowna in 1987. He spent his remaining years working as Regional Director of Court Services for the Province of British Columbia. After 35 years of service, Mike retired in 2005. Mike was always well respected and liked by his fellow colleagues and he will be greatly missed.

Since Michael's retirement he was heavily involved with the Kelowna Badminton Club and was actively president of The Club from 2004 until his passing. He was always well admired, liked and celebrated by all the members, and many have became close friends over the years. Each and every spring you could always find Michael and Linda hanging out with their friends on any given Okanagan golf course. He undeniably had a love for his sports, and was always physically active.

Anyone that had the pleasure of knowing Mike knew he loved to joke around, was the life of the party, and was always willing to lend a helping hand wherever needed. He was forever playing tricks and goofing around and one of his most favorite things was rough housing with his grandsons. They absolutely loved their grandpa and will forever miss their tumble time, the 'claw' and joking around with him.

Our Dad was a social butterfly, and was happiest when he was surrounded by those he loved.

There will not be a service at this time, as Michael's wishes were to have a celebration in the summer of 2022. More information for family and friends to TBD.

My sincere condolences to Linda and the Christian Family. A true loss to you and to all of us. Taken way too soon. Some 25 years of working with Mike and he was a great boss, friend and sports pal. Always caring for others before himself and always waiting for a chance to pounce on a wayward phrase or joke opportunity, we will miss him. No more pain, Rest in Peace Boss.

Mike hired me in Rossland Courts in 1980, and was a wonderful boss. When he went to Kelowna, we would ultimately run into him in Costco...I'd hear a smart crack behind me in a line-up, and there he would be. I'm sorry to hear he struggled for the past year, and know he will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

I was also heartbroken to hear that Mike had passed away…it is hard to accept. I worked with Mike for many years…going back to the early 80’s. He was respected by everyone who knew and worked with him. Mike was one of the kindest and most caring people I have had the good fortune to know…and his love for pranks and fun was just plain fun was infectious!! He made every day a little brighter for so many of us!
My heart goes out to Mike’s family.

I first met Mike in 1969 after I met my husband Chris. When Chris and Mike were in high school Chris would defend Mike like he was a younger brother. They went camping and fishing and played broomball. On one occasion they draped our carport in plastic and repainted Mike's mustang a beautiful metallic blue. Wow! Their strong bond of friendship remained throughout the years. He is missed.

Such a loss. For Linda and Mike’s family - our hearts go out to you. And for us at Kelowna Badminton Club. Mike had such a big heart and gave so much of himself. But was never one to advertise how much time and effort he put into serving others. Always a smile and a word of encouragement or witty banter. Even over the last couple of years at board meetings he wouldn’t complain or let on how much he was suffering, but continued to do what he has dedicatedly done for many many years: lead, serve, give…and cajole Linda into doing the really tough stuff! We will miss you Mike.

I spent a number of years with Mike at the Court House professionally and at the golf course socially. At work Mike was a good leader and mentor, using humour and empathy to encourage teamwork. On the golf course he kept us entertained with his practical jokes and unusual golf swing.
My condolences to the family at this sad time. Mike will be missed by all.

Our condolences to Michael's family. He was a great human being. He had class. He was distinguished. He was a gentleman. He was kind and loving. He absolutely loved his family. We had the pleasure of knowing Michael for for many years. He had a great sense of humour. He was always looking for a new joke. We loved telling him the same ones over and over. It drove him crazy. Anyone, especially his family were so lucky to have him in their lives. He was a gift to all of us.
To his family...you are in our prayers

Our condolences to Linda and Mike's family. Met Mike first time at Mission Creek Golf Course where he played golf with the men's night golf. He was always such a positive person and a great guy to get to know. We got to know Linda as well through golf activities, get togethers at the lake and also in Palm Springs. Mike was someone you were glad to meet and never forget. I think he probably has already set up a racket ball game with Pete and golf game with Pete and Cam.

I spent much of my youth at the Christian household - Mike was such a fun Dad. Tanys, Jess and Ash, I am so glad you got to be with him at his final moments. That's what family is about... what a beautiful way to go. Much love and respect, Sarah Thompson and family.

My sincere condolences to Linda and Mike's family. Mike was the ultimate problem solver, always finding a way to overcome the frequent and numerous challenges faced by his Interior staff and Court Services provincially. Mike took care of the people he supervised. It is a sentiment often stated to me over the years, perhaps not to Mike directly. Mike provided support and opportunities for many people, often without their knowledge. I'm sure I benefitted more than most and was fortunate enough to be able to thank him prior to his passing.

I knew Michael from many years at the Kelowna Badminton Club. Always liked to play as his partner and not against him for obvious reasons. I always appreciated his sense of humor which was always neat and appreciated. He was a great leader at the club and I will remember the last time I ran into him when I ran into him with a couple of old badminton players at lunch. A great guy.

I am heart-broken to hear of Mike's passing and my deepest condolences to his family. I worked in Court Services initially while Mike was the Regional Director for the Interior and then had the pleasure of working with Mike, along with Warren and Keith, while with AG Human Resources in the Interior Region. He always had a way of finding the best way to approach issues and had no hesitation in helping employees who found themselves in hardship and I will always remember him for that; he put the "human" in to the human resources responsibilities of management.

I had the pleasure of working with Michael. I was very sad to hear of this news. I very much enjoyed working with him and I had much admiration for how he "ran his ship" and how he treated people. My thoughts are with Michael's family, and especially with Ashlee whom I also worked with.
