BISHOP, Robert Lou

BISHOP, Robert Lou

BISHOP, Robert Lou

Born July 10, 1953, this year his family celebrated his life after Robert battled valiantly to make 70, but passed away peacefully at home with his brother and pets at hand on the evening of April 11.

Robert was the fifth of 6 children born to Orvel and Huldah (Kilbride) Bishop in Chatham, Ontario. He is survived by his sister Patricia and his brothers Jim, Danny, Larry and Michael. Robert also has 3 nieces and 1 nephew that will all miss his kindness, laughter, generosity and contributions.

Bob graduated from St. Clair College's Crafts and Arts program and later returned there to teach woodcarving, which he mastered after being self taught. Bob also studied at the Royal Ontario Museum and was certified as a painting restorer, and spent several years working at Chatham's Thames Arts Centre, where he occasionally acted on stage as well as working backstage and in the gallery.

Bob created and taught graphic art and computer media in Alberta, and amongst his many other talents he loved playing guitar and mandolin. He took his music to another level with his handmade solid body electric mandolin, which he would jam with on stage around Alberta.

Robert performed as a duo with Dave Hardy at the Sidetrack Cafe in Edmonton in the '80's and attracted great interest. Bill Bourne became a cherished friend and gave Bob credit on his Dance and Celebrate album for his support and inspiration. Pretty sure he borrowed Bob's mandolin for the sessions; I know he and Alan crashed at our place while they recorded.

Robert spent several years working in Victoria, and was involved with the Board of Directors for Metchosin Summer School for the Arts. He even spent some time on Salt Spring Island before settling in the Okanogan. In his 50's, Robert decided to start rock climbing and ended up with a group that scaled Skaha Bluffs on a regular basis. He rode his mountain bike from Kelowna to Penticton on the highway!

In a final gesture of generosity and service to others, Robert donated his body to the UBC medical school. While his friends and family mourn his passing, we will fondly remember all the cherished moments when Robert surprised and dazzled us with his brilliance and creativity; his music and artful creations remain to inspire and console.
