Bush At Prayer Service

President Bush is attending the National Prayer Service on Friday, after a whirlwind Inauguration Day on which he outlined a U.S. policy "with the ultimate goal of ending tyranny in our world." Friday's prayer service, a presidential tradition, is being held at Washington National Cathedral. Vice President Dick Cheney and his wife, Lynne, are also attending the ceremony. Hundreds of Palestinian police fanned out across the northern Gaza Strip on Friday to prevent rocket fire on Israeli communities, part of an unprecedented deployment agreed to by military officials from both sides. The move is potentially the first substantial act of Palestinian-Israeli co-operation in cracking down on cross-border violence under the newly elected Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. A car bomb exploded outside a Shiite mosque in Baghdad Friday where worshippers were celebrating a major Muslim holiday, killing at least 14 people and wounding 40, police and hospital officials said, the country's latest violence in the lead-up to this month's elections. The car blew up outside the al-Taf mosque in the capital's southwest, where Shiites were celebrating one of Islam's most important holidays, Eid al-Adha, or Feast of Sacrifice. Full story
Vietnam on Friday confirmed the seventh human death from bird flu in three weeks and neighboring Thailand recorded its first case among poultry this year as health experts expressed concern about a possible repeat of last year’s devastating outbreak. About 330,000 birds have died or been slaughtered because of the virus in Vietnam this year, and the World Health Organization is worried infection could spread rapidly with the start of the Feb. 9 Lunar New Year holiday.
