Dhaka Bombings

At least 13 people were killed and hundreds of others were wounded when a series of bombs ripped through a political rally in Bangladesh Saturday.

Witnesses said the first bomb went off during a speech by Sheikh Hasina Wajed, the country's main opposition leader.

Awami League party officials say Hasina's bodyguard was killed, while she suffered only minor leg injuries.

  • U.S. airplanes pounded Najaf's ancient core and soldiers battled Shia militants Sunday, amid fears that talks to end the uprising would collapse. Rebels returned fire as tanks rolled close to the Iman Ali mosque, the holy shrine that supporters of rebel cleric Muqtada al-Sadr have used as a stronghold since fighting broke out Aug. 5.
  • Armed robbers stole two paintings by Norwegian artist Edvard Munch Saturday during a daylight heist at an Oslo museum. The paintings included a version of Munch's famous work "The Scream," and a version of another well-known painting "Madonna." Police are looking for two or three suspects who disappeared in a black Audi A6.
