- A series of large explosions shook Najaf on Thursday, hours after Iraq's interim prime minister urged Shia militants to end a violent standoff in the holy city. The first aerial bomb arrives in Najaf during a U.S. assault. It's not known what caused the explosions, and U.S. officials have not confirmed whether their warplanes were involved. Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr's Mahdi Army are holed up in the city's revered Imam Ali mosque, where they've held off Iraqi and U.S. forces for two weeks. It's believed al-Sadr may also be in the mosque.

- At least nine people died when violent storms blew through France this week, officials confirmed on Thursday. All the dead were swimmers swept away in overflowing rivers or dragged under by waves in the Mediterranean Ocean.
