Hurricane Charley has claimed 16 lives, taken the homes of thousands and left hundreds still missing.
Large quantities of fresh water and food are being delivered daily. A Red Cross official says this is the agency’s largest response since September 11.
The tropical storm hit Florida on Friday afternoon, bringing wind over 300 km/h. The category four storm also prompted at least seven tornadoes.
The damage to residential areas is estimated to be between $5 and $11 billion. The area has been declared a federal disaster area.
One million people are also without power. It isn’t expected to be back up for weeks in the worst areas.
