Renowned artist Banksy's latest piece celebrates health workers

Banksy tributes frontline

Renowned artist Banksy is known for his socially or politically vibrant works of art, painted in places where they will capture public attention.

But this week, Banksy released a special artwork for the Southampton General Hospital in Southampton, United Kingdom - about 70 miles southwest of London.

The world-famous anonymous street artist dedicated this piece to healthcare workers fighting the COVID-19 pandemic on the frontlines, calling it "game changer."

In the painting, a child chooses the nurse as his 'superhero' toy, while Batman and Spider-Man look on from the bin.

It was left at the hospital with a note for hospital workers, saying: "Thanks for all you’re doing. I hope this brightens the place up a bit, even if it’s only black and white.”

Twitter fans have applauded the artist's depiction of today's world, sharing comments like "Superheroes don't always wear capes."

The painting will remain on display temporarily at SGH, the hospital confirmed on its website, until the end of the lockdown when it will put on public display and later auctioned, with all proceeds going to UK's publicly funded National Health Service charities.

"Here at Southampton, our hospital family has been directly impacted with the tragic loss of much loved and respected members of staff and friends," says Paula Head, chief executive of University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust.

"The fact that Banksy has chosen us to recognise the outstanding contribution everyone in and with the NHS is making, in unprecedented times, is a huge honour.

"It will be really valued by everyone in the hospital, as people get a moment in their busy lives to pause, reflect and appreciate this piece of art. It will no doubt also be a massive boost to morale for everyone who works and is cared for at our hospital.”
