Engine fire, runway pileup

Amazingly, no one was injured when an Air Vanuatu airliner first experienced an engine fire and then collided with two other aircraft after going off the runway when it landed on the tiny South Pacific island.

The incident happened on Saturday at Port Vila on the island nation off the east coast of Australia, reports.

The Avions de Transport Regional ATR-72-212A was flying from from Tanna to Port Vila with 39 passengers and four crew on board when the right engine caught fire and smoke entered the cabin.

The crew to shut the engine down and continued to land about 20 minutes later at Port Vila.

During the roll out, the aircraft veered off the runway and collided with a Unity Airlines Britten Norman BN-2 Islander, which was damaged beyond repair, and an Air Taxi Britten Norman BN-2 Islander, which had its tail smashed off in the impact.

Passengers reported seeing flames from the engine, and 13 were treated for smoke inhalation.
