Teen fatally shot by deputies

A 16-year-old boy who was reportedly suicidal and threatening his mother with knives and a baseball bat was fatally shot Friday by sheriff's deputies who were called to the family's home in suburban Minneapolis, investigators said.

Carver County sheriff's deputies were called to a home in Chanhassen around 10 a.m. Friday after the teen's mother called 911, according to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. The bureau said deputies used a stun gun on the teen and, at one point, two deputies fired their guns, hitting him.

The teen, whose name hasn't been released, died at the scene, the bureau said. One deputy was treated for injuries that were not life-threatening.

Body cameras and squad car cameras may have recorded portions of the incident, the bureau said, adding that its investigators were still interviewing witnesses and gathering evidence late Friday afternoon.

Distraught relatives were openly crying in the driveway of the home but declined to speak publicly about the incident. People coming and going from the home said they were friends and classmates of the victim, but declined to comment until the family decided to do so.

Multiple law enforcement agencies were at the home, which is in a wooded area along a busy highway.

Officials in the school district where the teen attended high school declined to comment until they had more information from authorities.

The state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension said it would release the deputies' names after they are interviewed. Both deputies have been placed on standard administrative leave.
