NATO boosts spending

U.S. President Donald Trump says NATO allies have agreed to an additional $33 million in defence spending.

Speaking after an emergency session of the alliance in Brussels, Trump said the member nations will increase their spending to two per cent of GDP and discuss ever higher spending once that level is reached.

Trump also said the U.S. commitment to NATO "remains very strong" despite reports that he threatened to pull out in a dispute over defence spending.

He told a news conference that he told people he would be "very unhappy" if they didn't increase their commitments, adding the U.S. has been paying "probably 90 per cent of the costs of NATO."

More to come.
