Blasts Rock Bali

  • As many as four near-simultaneous explosions rocked Indonesia's resort island of Bali on Saturday, leaving dozens of casualties, local media reported. Authorities are not confirming how many are dead or wounded. Bali police spokesman Lt. Col. Antonius Reniban confirmed that several blasts went off, but he could not say if they were bombs.CTV

  • People were being asked to move out of low-lying sections of the Mexican resort city of Cabo San Lucas Saturday, where a Pacific hurricane called Otis is expected to cause flooding. Police have been knocking on doors asking residents to leave their homes. About a thousand people are expected to move and shelters have been set up to accommodate them.CBC

  • The United States military in Iraq Saturday launched a major new offensive in the west of the country in an attempt to rout al-Qaeda militants around the border with Syria. About 1,000 U.S. troops are involved, backed by helicopters.CBC

  • Firefighters began to control a raging wildfire northwest of Los Angeles that has scorched nearly 24,000 acres. The blaze is 40 percent contained. So far, the firefighting effort has paid off. Six structures, including homes, have burned but 2,000 others have been saved, fire officials said.CNN

  • Fare-paying Gregory Olsen has blasted off on a Russian Soyuz rocket bound for the International Space Station, making the U.S. millionaire and scientist the world's third space tourist. The rocket lifted off with an earsplitting roar from Kazakhstan's Baikonur launch site Saturday morning, carrying Olsen, cosmonaut Valery Tokarev and astronaut William McArthur.CTV

  • ABC News anchor Peter Jennings, who died of lung cancer in August, left an estate valued at more than $50 million, most of which was willed to his fourth wife and to two children from a previous marriage. Jennings, 67, signed the will on April 21, 2005, 16 days after announcing on his World news Tonight program he had been diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer. He died on August 7 in New York.CNN
