Winning Globes all in a day's work

Amid the usual display of American award show glitz and glamour were some surprise wins as well as some predictable ones at the 71st Annual Golden Globes, which aired tonight.

Favoured-to-win 12 Years a Slave was named best dramatic film, but surprisingly took no other wins.

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler emceed tonight’s awards show, and proved to be a popular choice with the audience of their peers. Poehler stopped emceeing long enough to receive her own award for best actress in a TV musical or comedy for Parks and Recreation. This is her first Golden Globe win.

“I’ve never won anything like this, it’s so cliché, but you get really nervous.” she said.

Picking up three awards was American Hustle, which won best musical or comedy film, along with awards for both Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Adams.  The film, a crime caper saga, was inspired by the Abscam scandal.

The carpet was swarming as always with celebrities and super-celebrities, among them Julia Roberts and Cate Blanchett . . . but no Woody Allen, who is noted for skipping such events. Accepting his win of the Lifetime Achievement award was ex-flame Diane Keaton. “I think it’s safe to say that Woody Allen is an anomaly . . . 74 movies in 48 years. He’s directed them, he’s starred in them, he’s written them,” said Keaton. Keaton has appeared in several Allen movies.
