Asian Heritage Month

May is Asian Heritage Month. It was launched in 2002 by the Government of Canada to celebrate the Asian cultures and heritage that have woven themselves into the fabric of our culturally diverse community. Did you know that over 43% of Vancouver residents have an Asian Heritage? Info Here.

Interestingly in the article they also note that there is concern that in Vancouver some large Asian ethnic groups have isolated themselves into smaller cultural silos (Farid Rohani, Laurier Institution) and that traditional tensions still exist so Asian Heritage Month provides not only an opportunity to showcase our Asian Heritage but also a chance for Asian groups to work together collaboratively.

There is an amazing array of Asian themed activites in Kelowna and this year there seems to be a tremendous emphasis on free family events whether it is the Kelowna Art Gallary free family crafts, or the free community showcase on May 24th, or the movie nights at the Okanagan Regional Library. Click here for upcoming movies.

If you've never been to any of the past Asian Heritage events I found this great video from the 2012 Opening Ceremonies. The video gives you a great idea of what is in store and features the always impressive, Art Lee, who has performed his amazing Taiko show in our community half a dozen times over the past decade and has a show coming up at the Kelowna Community Theatre on May 2nd. Ticket info here.

You will also catch a glimpse in the video of Ensemble Liberta who will perform a collaborative show with Art Lee called Haruka Naru Hibiki (Distant Reverberations) on May 16th at the Kelowna Community Theatre

Within the a 2 day period (May 1st and 2nd) you will be able to catch two differant Taiko groups with the Asian Heritage Month Gala Concert featuring "Sound of Korea" at the RCA on May 1st for only $10. http://www.asianheritage.ca

One of the most popular events will have passed by the time this article is published but the 4th Annual Vaisakhi Parade has been a tremedously successful event growing exponentially over the past few years.

Here is a full listing of all the Asian Heritage events happening in Kelowna.
