After 9-month closure, Peachland’s Gasthaus nearly ready to reopen

Gasthaus close to reopening

UPDATE 1:45 p.m.

Peachland's Gasthaus may not in fact be ready to open on Thursday as hoped.

Manager Andrew Neville tells Castanet they have received some "eleventh-hour" news that has thrown a wrench into their reopening plans.

The restaurant will open very soon, and the Thursday date is tentative, but customers should know the reopening could be delayed. The Gasthaus website is being revised to reflect the unsure nature of the reopen.

Castanet will update when a firm date for reopening is announced.

Nine months after a burst pipe forced the closure of one of the Okanagan’s most iconic restaurants, Peachland’s Gasthaus is finally ready to reopen.

The German restaurant says on its website that it will reopen on Thursday at 4 p.m. For a limited period, the restaurant will be open Thursday to Saturday.

“It has been a long process in getting our restaurant to open its doors once again. We have met some very challenging situations over the last nine months,” said a statement on the restaurant’s website.

“Now, our current issue is finding staff who want to be a part of our team. I am confident that once word spreads of our imminent opening that we will get back to full strength. If you know of anyone who is looking for either a full or part time job, please send them our way.”

Until they are fully staffed, Gasthaus says they will be able to accommodate 50 or so guests per sitting with two sittings per day. Reservations are encouraged.

“We look forward to seeing you again,” the website says, explaining they will open with a Bavarian-style menu.

“It has been a stressful and difficult 18 months or so. But just like the phoenix - we have risen once more.”

Gasthaus has been closed since Dec. 27, 2021, when a pipe burst and caused significant water damage to the building.

The restoration was then delayed by the presence of asbestos in the late 1940s-constructed log cabin building that makes up part of the restaurant. The entire restaurant needed a full decontamination and repairs and restoration could not fully begin until the end of April.
