Woman find partial remains of cat in her yard after it was likely killed by coyotes

Cat torn apart

A woman who lives in West Kelowna's Lakeview Heights is warning her neighbours to keep their small pets close after one of her cats was likely grabbed and killed by coyotes.

Sara posted on the Lakeview Heights neighbourhood friends Facebook page warning people to make sure they bring their pets in at night.

She has noticed a lot of coyotes in the area recently and told Castanet one of her cats went missing a couple of weeks ago. She found a bunch of fur in her yard a day later, and then Sunday morning she made a gruesome discovery.

She woke up and went outside and saw a half of the cat’s body lying on the ground. It appeared the pet had been torn apart by predators. Savage was only eight months old.

Sara said she might call the BC Conservation Officer Service after another encounter while walking her small dog early Monday morning at Kalamoir Regional Park.

“There was like four down there, and then I walked in my neighbourhood — I'm on Thacker and Stuart — and one ran across the road there.”

She wanted to get the word out about what happened to her pet to raise awareness. Several other cats have gone missing in the community lately.

According to WildSafe BC coyote reports tend to increase during the breeding season, which typically begins in February and continues into the spring. It adds that all coyote encounters that are aggressive in nature or show a lack of fear of people and pets should be reported to the Conservation Officer Service at 1-877-952-7277.
