Elderly man dies after crashing into Okanagan Lake in Peachland

UPDATE 10:32 a.m.

One person is dead after a single-vehicle incident on Highway 97 near Antlers Beach, south of Peachland.

Police are investigating the incident that happened at approximately 10:15 p.m. Thursday, resulting in the vehicle landing upside down and partially submerged in Okanagan Lake.

Const. Mike Della-Paolera says when officers arrived, they located a white Subaru Forester upside down and semi-submerged with a lone elderly male occupant still inside the vehicle, deceased.

The vehicle was travelling southbound on Highway 97, hit a concrete divider on the right front bumper then steered into the water.

A pair of witnesses at the scene broke the driver's side window and attempted to extract the male from the vehicle but were unsuccessful.

"This tragic event is still under investigation by the BC Coroners Service and the West Kelowna RCMP," Della-Paolera says.

RCMP is asking anyone who witnessed this incident who has not yet spoken with investigators or has dashcam video and was travelling on the highway in the area during this event to please contact the West Kelowna RCMP at (250) 768-2880.

A vehicle reportedly went into Okanagan Lake overnight in Peachland.

Unconfirmed reports are that the vehicle went into the water near Renfrew Road about 10:15 p.m.

Details are few, but the northbound lane of Highway 97 was said to be closed while first responders worked at the scene.

The patient was reportedly extricated from the vehicle by 10:55 p.m.
