Large resort spa and hotel proposed for Shannon Lake

Resort spa proposed

The City of West Kelowna is considering an application for a large spa resort in Shannon Lake.

The Loewen Development Group has proposed the ‘Baden Spa’ at a 13-acre site on Shannon View Drive, across the road from the golf course.

The development includes hotel buildings totalling 188 units, 10 cabins, restaurant, spa building, staff housing and more.

“The Baden Spa is a response to a need in the marketplace for resort accommodation that is focused on health, wellness and relaxation,” said the proponent in a letter to the city.

“The wellness sector is a well known growth area in the economy with many businesses directing their focus toward a population with discretionary income looking to find unique resort activities that are tailored to their more active lifestyles and complimentary to other recreational pursuits in their lives.”

The project will be considered by the city’s advisory planning commission on Wednesday. The committee reviews development applications and provides input prior to projects reaching council.

City planners are recommending a comprehensive development zone, customized zoning, for the project. A geotechnical report, environmental assessment, transportation review and functional servicing report have already been submitted to the city.

The lot proposed for development was previously rezoned for a 49-unit townhouse development in 2011, but that project never got off the ground. There has been no activity at the site since.

After feedback is gathered from the advisory planning committee on Wednesday, the proposal will be forwarded to council at a later date.
