'Fire in the Mountains' trip helps break down barriers for those living with disabilities

West Kelowna Professional Firefighters Local 4457 are gearing up for this year's annual 'Fire in the Mountains' trip which breaks down barriers for those with disabilities.

This is an opportunity for one lucky individual to join the firefighters for up to three days while hiking or paddling somewhere within the province's pristine wilderness. The adventure will be guided by the Community Recreational Initiatives Society Adaptive along with their Adaptive Travel team.

A past participant’s mother, Debra Miller says, “these experiences have a much greater impact than just the participant chosen. It changes lives and gives hope for many.”

Previous trip destinations include Yoho National Park, Murtle Lake, Desolation Sound, Cathedral Lakes and Levette Lake.

This year's destination will be announced later this summer.

Former CRIS program coordinator, Eric Rampone shares "These trips have a tremendous impact on a participant’s life but also on the lives of those volunteering. These trips help to improve mental and physical health, while breaking down social and physical barriers and promoting inclusion for all."
