Smoke Alarms Checked

Check your smoke alarm. Or let the firefighters check it.

The fourth Community Smoke Alarm campaign is scheduled for September 22, 2007, this time for residents of Westview Village Mobile Home Park, 1999 Highway 97 South.

“Having a working smoke alarm in your home cuts down your chances of dying in a fire by half,” says Debbie Dupasquier, a Public Life/Fire Safety Educator with the Central Okanagan Regional District.

“Smoke alarms provide an early warning of smoke and fire, providing you with time to escape safely.”

Westside Fire and Rescue will be conducting the campaign from 10 a.m. through 2 p.m. Firefighters will be going door-to-door checking homes for working fire alarms, and if the home has no working smoke alarm, either a new battery or a new alarm will be offered to the residents by WFR.

“We want to be able to offer smoke alarms to people who need them,” says Dupasquier.

WFR will have a fire truck displayed on site, and will be offering refreshments and a chance at a door prize. An information booth under a tent will provide literature on a number of fire safety topics.

A fire extinguisher demonstration will be held around 1:00 p.m.
