West Kelowna man no longer in the cold after being gifted new furnace and water tank

Workers gift man hot water

A West Kelowna man is thanking his lucky stars after having a new furnace and hot water tank installed for free.

Richard Solbakken ran into hard times this winter when both his furnace and hot water tank broke down, leaving him in the cold for three months in the middle of winter.

Doug White and his wife Shelley knew Solbakken through a past business dealing and when they found out about his dire straits, they decided to go to work on his behalf.

Enter Blair Husak from Blair Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning.

"He had no heat or hot water," said Husak, explaining they decided to give him a new furnace and provide the labour to install the unit for free.

"Once our staff found out that he also needed a hot water tank they stepped up as well," says Husak.

The staff at Blair Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning, passed the hat around and covered the cost of the new hot water tank and then offered their labour free of charge. Husak says the total value of the donation and the work is around $6,000.

"I was just so impressed with the compassion that these people have, it's amazing," says White.

Husak says they managed to get the work done, including repairing the water damage caused by the previous leaking hot water tank and now Solbakken is back in business and "overwhelmed by the generosity."
