Two pets perish in West Kelowna house fire, firefighter injured

Fire deemed accidental

UPDATE 1:40 p.m.

West Kelowna Fire Rescue says a blaze Thursday morning that claimed the life of two pets and injured a firefighter has been declared accidental.

Fire chief Jason Brolund says during the firefighting search operation, a firefighter fell through the floor to the basement.

“A rapid intervention team was activated to assist, and the firefighter was able to rescue himself. He was assessed, transported to KGH and discharged shortly after to recover at home from a knee and back injury,” said Brolund.

The cause of the fire has been attributed to cooking.

“The public is reminded to check their smoke alarms as they can save you from fire, especially while you are asleep,” Brolund added.
