Public hearing set for West Kelowna's short-term rental bylaws

Hearing on short term rents

The public will get a chance to weigh in later this month on a package of proposed zoning bylaw amendments which will regulate short-term rentals within residential areas.

The stand-alone public hearing is scheduled for 5 p.m. Tuesday, March 16.

Last month, council voted 4-3 to move the bylaw amendments directly to a public hearing. Those voting against the motion, councillors Stephen Johnston, Jayson Zilkie and Jason Friesen did so mainly because of a provision which would eliminate homeowners who already had secondary suites or carriage homes from entering into the short-term rental market.

The series of amendments include provisions as to where short-term rentals would be permitted, number of rooms which can be rented, parking requirements, licencing, safety requirement and fines associated with non-compliance of bylaws.

Because of COVID-19 orders restricting public access to council meetings and public hearings in person, those wishing to address council are required to contact the city at 778-797-2250 to be added to the list.

Residents will also be able to call that number during the public hearing to be added to the speaker's list.

Written submissions can also be sent to the city via mail, email - [email protected] - or in person at city hall.

Written submissions must be received by the 4 p.m. close of business the day before the public hearing.

The public hearing will be webcast through the city's website.
