The last privately-owned camping site on Okanagan Lake is up for sale

It's the end of an era

It’s the end of an era. After 65 years in business, Todd’s RV and Camping in Peachland is up for sale.

While there wasn’t anything distinctive about the campground in the past, today it stands as the last privately-owned destination RV park on Okanagan Lake.

“It a prime development site. It’s 680-feet of frontage with Beach Avenue in front of you,” said Graham Todd.

It all started back when Graham Todd’s grandparents purchased a lot off Beach Avenue in Peachland in 1928. They ran an orchard for a few years, with cattle roaming free, but in 1956 a camper driving by the property asked if he could cut out an area to use. Thus began Todd’s Tent Town.

In the 90s, Todd’s parents rebranded the site to Todd’s RV and Camping. Now the location has 60 RV and 18 tent sites available.

“The same people have been coming for up to 60 years, a lot of them 30, 40, 50, 60 years for their two-to-three weeks and then as other campgrounds have closed we’ve picked up all of their customers that usually come over the years too.”

He says that once people park on his property they rarely need to move their vehicles as most amenities are nearby.

“The walkability is incredible, to the IGA or downtown and we’re central to the Okanagan.”

Back in 2016, the campground saw their highest number of camper nights with 11,000. Besides connecting with the campers, Graham says his fondest memory is meeting his wife.

“She started camping here when she was like one and then we met up later on in life. We had four kids, and two of our kids' married campers too.”

“It’ll be sad to see it go, but it comes to a point that you have to do that - there will be some upset feelings though.”

What do the current owners hope to see once it’s sold?

Ideally, they would like to see the location converted to a provincial or regional park, or at least an RV Park. But if that isn't possible, they hope developers would build modest homes.

The park consists of five parcels that are now for sale that can be sold off individually if need be. If the property is not sold by the spring, the business will continue to operate, with reservations being accepted starting in March.
