Decorations stolen from several front lawns in Smith Creek area

Grinch hits several homes

Several Smith Creek homes were hit by a brazen Grinch Friday night.

At least three residents in the area said their Christmas decorations were stolen right out of their front yards, and one caught the theft on their security camera.

Greg Herron's footage shows a person in a newer white Jeep park out front of his home on Ironridge Place just before 6 p.m. before casually scooping up a several lit-up candy canes that were lining the home's driveway. The person doesn't seem too concerned as a vehicle drives by during the theft.

Herron posted the footage to a Smith Creek community Facebook page, and two other people in the neighbourhood said their decorations had been stolen too.

“One lady contacted me and she had her sign stolen just before and her husband remembered seeing that vehicle around, and another lady posted later in the night that she had a deer and a carriage that was stolen as well,” Herron said.

“As you can see in the video, [the thief] just doesn't care.”

Herron and his family were having dinner at the time of the theft and didn't notice. He realized the decorations were gone about two hours later and then he checked his security footage.

Herron spoke to a couple RCMP officers who were in his neighbourhood about the theft Friday night, and he believes another neighbour was making a formal report to the RCMP Saturday.

While these Grinch-like thefts occur every holiday season, Herron says this is the first time he's had to deal with it in his neighbourhood.

“Unfortunately, people are going to do what they're going to do,” he said. “It's not like she's coming up in a beater car ... I don't know whether or not she's hurting, or if it's just the thrill, or Canadian Tire is just sold out of them.”
