Casa Loma Flooding

Some Casa Loma residents on the Westside are pointing fingers after experiencing more flooding as a result of this week's heavy downpours.

A handful of homes on Campbell Road suffered varying degrees of flooding Thursday when the sewer system backed up.

Resident Shirley Simson was one of them.

"The water poured into our garage and moved into the family room and bedroom. We may need all new rugs which is totally ridiculous."

Neighbour Mike Duggan witnessed two manhole covers come out of their seats at the peak of the storm.

"I saw the two manhole covers lift up and the water started coming out."

Duggan says it's not the first time the sewer system has backed up and wants some action.

"This is the fifth time that it has happened. We've asked the Regional District and the Ministry of Highways to do something about it and no one seems to want to accept responsibility. The Ministry says it's the Regional District's problem, but the District says it's the Ministry's, so we're stuck in the middle."

The Regional District's Bruce Smith says the affected Casa Loma residents need to talk to the contractor hired by the provincial government.

"We appreciate the problems the residents are experiencing, but the matter regarding drainage is solely the responsibility of the Ministry of Highways and its contractors."

Smith adds that the Regional District and Ministry of Highways met with Casa Loma residents a few years ago and thought the confusion over who is responsible for drainage and roads was cleared up.
