Pros Skate For Neitsch

Former NHL goaltender Kelly Hrudey is on board. So is Nashville Predators defenceman Shea Weber.

Hrudey and Weber will take part in 'Face Off For A Friend,' a benefit hockey game for 13-year-old Jonathon Neitsch, August 19 at Royal LePage Place.

Neitsch, who played hockey with the Westside Warriors Bantam rep team this past season, was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in February. He is scheduled to undergo surgery later this month in New York.

Hrudey, a commentator with Hockey Night In Canada, says it was easy for him to get involved.

"If anybody read the letter I received from Steve (Greenaway), it's real moving and heartfelt, and there's absolutely no way somebody could say no. Getting on board was very easy for me," says Hrudey.

Hrudey will serve as the master of ceremonies, conducting interview with players on the ice and on the bench as the game goes on.

Steve Greenaway, who is organizing the event, says he has had great response so far from players he has contacted.

"The response to the initial feelers we've been putting out has been positive. Players are now checking dates for previous commitments to free up their schedule because I think they recognize it's such a great cause," says Greenaway.

He says corporate sponsorship is being sought. Corporations wanting to get on board can call 768-1240 or 768-1062.

Greenaway says aside from the game, there will also be a silent auction to raise more funds.

Tickets are $10 each, and should be available within the next few weeks.
