Leak Closes Gellatly Road

An ammonia leak forced the closure on a portion of Gellatly Road near the Westbank Yacht Club Monday afternoon.

Westside Fire Chief Wayne Schnitzler says the the leak occurred at a fruit packing house on Gellatly Road. The building is scheduled to be decommissioned.

"The new owners had removed the ammonia from the facility. They had some overflow stuff on the ground which they diluted, however, the didn't dilute it enough, causing the smell," says Schnitzler.

He says they had to wait quite some time for a maintenance person to attend the scene and get the ammonia cleaned up.

"We didn't know this was going on, although what they were doing was a good thing and helping us out."
