April trial for accused West Kelowna wife killer adjourned

Virus delays murder trial

With the postponement of all but urgent matters in B.C. Supreme Court Wednesday, the trial for the man accused of murdering his wife in West Kelowna in 2015 has officially been adjourned.

Kevin Costin, 59, was arrested in May 2017, a year and a half after the body of his wife was found inside the couple's home on Boucherie Road.

Firefighters discovered 37-year-old Hazel Budiongan's body when they responded to a fire at the house. Originally from the Phillipines, she had married Costin shortly before her death.

Costin was scheduled to face a trial for second-degree murder in front of a jury beginning April 14, but in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the trial was adjourned Wednesday.

Costin was originally scheduled to face trial last summer, but that was adjourned to this spring. Given the uncertainty around the COVID-19 pandemic, it's unclear when a new trial will be set.

His case will be back before the courts on April 17, for a “let’s see what unfolds date,” according to Crown Counsel communications Gordon Comer.

Costin remains under house arrest, under $10,000 bail, after he was released in December.
